Wow! 15 yards (45 feet) is a long shot for a subcompact short barrel handgun... Not impossible of course, but takes practice. I hope should I ever need to draw in a life threatening situation that my threat is not 15 yards out. -
I went through LFI guns, and I highly recommend Wes' Class. Here is what his qualification looked like:
3yds - 6rds, reload, 6rds (under 15 seconds)
7yds - 6rds, reload 6rds (under 30 seconds)
15yds - 6rds, reload, 6rds (under 45 seconds)Leave a comment:

Best I can gather, it is up to the instructor/class. They all seem to be different, and not mandated by the IA. Call/email your trainer.Leave a comment:

What is required to 'qualify' for a gun? I need to practice with my listed pistols at the range, but I can't seem to find an answer on many of the instructors' websites.

Question:
Lately, San Joaquin County has been asking CCW applicants for their employer's firearm policy statement. Obviously, for liability reasons, most employers are not going to authorize or openly state that their employees can carry firearms at work. As a result, recently issued CCWs now have restrictions on them that state something to the effect "Not authorized to carry firearm at work."
Here is my question: My good friend interviewed on Monday and explained that his employer does not have a written firearm policy because no one has ever asked, but now they are considering writing one. The investigator told him "ok, I will just write on your application that you are not authorized to carry your firearm at work. If something changes or you get a written statement from your employer stating you are authorized to carry at work from someone we can call and verify, then we can change it." But here is the catch: my friend is a Mortgage Broker and it is very difficult to define in his case precisely what "at work" means? For example, is "at work" just his office? Or does it included when he goes to the title company for a sign off? Is that "at work?" What about on the weekends, if he attends an open house with a realtor in a dangerous neighborhood? Is he at work? Or a client's home? Or what if he takes clients to a Sunday golf course or out to the duck blind in order to solicit business? Is he at work then? Finally, even more aggravating is that he is the branch manager and when the alarm at the branch goes off in the middle of the night he is required to go the branch, meet the police, and disarm the alarm. Since he lives very close to where he works, he often beats the police to his office and ends up having to wait for them. Any suggestions as to how he should address this situation?Last edited by Arrieta578; 11-04-2014, 6:22 PM.Leave a comment:

Have you guys thought about just giving Vince a call or a email and asking him what the qualification requirements are?

It was pretty easy. If you have any competency at all with a handgun you'll pass. There were three people in my class who owed extra rounds at the end of the qualification and all of them passed with no problem.
At the very beginning of the day they lined us up and had us do a one-hole drill, firing at a 1-inch target on the silhouette from 2 yards. Several people missed the silhouette completely at that distance. Very few were firing anything tighter than 6-inch groups. To go from that to being able to qualify at the end of the day speaks well to the quality of the course.Leave a comment:

Initial interview - 4/14
Followup interview phone call - today 11/4
I'm always cautiously optimistic, but hopefully today results in everything going smoothly. The BI said I should hear something in the near future.
Fingers crossed!Leave a comment:

I signed up for valley defense. I am trying to figure out what the requirements are for passing the shooting part of the course. What were the distances and accuracy needed? Thanks.Leave a comment:

I used California security training academy. It was 115 including qualification for one gun and 10 for each additional. It's in Sacramento thoughLeave a comment:

I used Valley Defense Consulting. They're in Modesto but the class is at the police range down near Patterson. Great class, Vince is a really nice guy, and the range is a really nice facility.Leave a comment:
