I'll give you the best short version I can.

The San Joaquin sheriff is currently issuing CCW's. How long that will last for nobody knows. Since you just got your HSC I'm going to assume you don't own any handguns. I don't think just getting you HSC will have any impact on getting approved but you will have to have a gun that's registered to you to put on the application when you turn it in. Taking a safety course is always a good idea but will have no effect on getting approved. Once you apply and get approved then you have to take a 16hr CCW course to pick up your permit.

I've been shooting shotguns for a long time and been around weapons my whole life. But I've been lazy and finally went to get my HSC test over the weekend. Of course passed 100%, and how could you not?! But given my newly minted and vulnerable piece of paper, would it be appropriate for me to register for a CCW after a training course? My background is crystal clean with the gov't, or I couldn't do what I do for a living. Would my situation be a red-flag being a newbie? I appreciate your advice in advance.
I live out in Tracy as well. PM me and we can meet up and I will talk you thru the process. We can have a burger and talk about what to expect, how the process goes and in what order you need to take steps.

I miss the days when everyone here was like that. I remember when there was a time that just by the fact that you were a member here I felt I could trust you. One time I even wrote a personal check, sent it, and trusted that the guy would send the rifle to my FFL. It is sad how we have regressed here and reassuring to see that we still have good blood here.

So you guys who recently got a CCW through San Joaquin county, are you only putting "self defense" as your good cause? No other statement required?

              Self Defense/Personal Protection

That's all I put. The investigator may ask if you have any other reasoning (camping, travel, etc) it's up to you to expand if you feel necessary.

I put personal protection. The detective acknowledged it but didn't ask any questions.

                Two things I found interesting...
I asked if I could load my .357 with .38 ammo and he said the caliber did not matter as long as the gun was registered to me and on my permit.
I own my own business and he asked if I intended to carry while working. I said yes and he wanted the first page of my tax return to prove ownership of the business. I told him I would supply a copy of my business license and he just said that might take awhile to confirm.

The detective was very nice, even friendly, and stuck only to the questions on the application.

They say six to eight weeks to be signed off.

I have my appointment coming up next week (28th) to submit paperwork and begin the waiting game. Wanted to ask: are people still including the cover letter and letter of transmittal that are provided as templates in the FIRST post of this Calguns San Joaquin thread, or are those bunk/unnecessary now?

No, you only need the two forms off of the Sheriff's website.

Thank you very much! I appreciate you taking the time to reply. You're right, I don't own a handgun yet, but I almost bought one until I was told the shop doesn't sell to CA because it's too complicated. Sigh. I'm searching high and low in CA for the make and model I played with and settled on. I'd mention it... but it might spark a needless debate.

No worries. One more thing if your looking to buy a new off roster gun through SSE for your permit I would read this thread first:

I have an SSE on my permit. As of right now SJSO doesn't care. We will see what the future holds.
