Applied April 14th, was approved and done November 17th.

Went to go pick it up, was told since my firearms were not registered in California I had to do so before they could hand it to me. (Moved from Washington)

December 19th, finally paperwork went through CADOJ and I'm picking up Tomorrow!

I've had several friends that have trided getting into corrections, fire, pd, sheriff, or CHP and fail the backgrounds because of lesser decisions that what you have made.
I understand that but the way things stand, by the book for most agencies, 8 years since last use of a drug would allow them to qualify for hire. It seems rather odd that someone can be hired and allowed to work as a LEO but not have a CCW. Keep in mind that none of those incidents resulted in a conviction, cases were both dropped.

I do understand that these decisions will have an effect on the rest of my life and I do own up to them; however, if I can pass a background investigation to not only purchase a firearm but for a possible job as a LEO and work in the medical field, why should it affect my application for a CCW in such a negative way?

^ you haven't been deined yet. Keep your head up. Maybe he just wanted to see if you own your mistakes and have started a new path in life which it seems you have. If you do get denied there is always the appeal. Get yourself mentally prepared for it. How your going to express what you have said here in a calm and educated manner. If you do get a denial then you will be ready. On a positive note he didn't tell you he was going to deny your application. I have heard stories where he calls the applicant in to meet with them in person and denied them on the spot.

You can apply and test for as many Leo, Fire, or other gov jobs you like with skeletons in your closet. You can "pass" all the tests and even be offered the conditional job offer. But when they do a full background or even a poly they can find one little thing in your past and pull that offer. I've seen it a lot in all of these jobs and I work in one of them.
I had a friend go through everything trying to get into corrections. He admitted to smoking one joint in highschool. He's 30 years old right now and they sent him the letter of denial based on that.
Every county or agency has their own rules. Just because the charges were dropped does not mean you still did not do the crime. It just means the person or owner of the facility that you "tagged" was probably a person that was pretty forgiving in life and was trying to save you from a future of grief from a mistake you made.
When you make mistakes in life "especially" when you are of age you live with the repercussions for a very long time. In the end, yes you could very well be denied by the sheriff. You could also be granted and receive your ccw. This just means he is actually doing his job and so are the background investigators.
If you had an absolutly spotless background this would not be an issue.

Now one last thing. The sheriff dept personnel do come onto this forum and they read this exact thread. I was asked one time what my screen name was. You just "sort of" outed the sheriff in a public forum before you even had a decision givin to you. What do you think might happen if the right person reads your post and decides to show the sheriff?? It's pretty easy to put 1+1 together and find out what screen name goes to what name and make judgements.

i think it's asking a lot of a sheriff to approve you under the circumstances. I'm sure life has matured you like it does us all. As the stakes are so very high, maybe a little more living first....

Moore brought up some speeding tickets, tagging incident during my freshman year in HS(dropped), a vicodin poss charge in HS (dropped), and my motorcycle accident. He made it sound pretty close to an outright denial without actually saying it. He asked me how he could sign a permit for someone like me to carry a gun being only a few years removed from HS (I am 25 y/o). I mentioned that I work full time, a college student full time, and a father of 2 and he just brought up the fact that I was only 25 and a few years removed from my run-ins with the law in HS.

Said something about how most officer involved shootings come from their own guns what more of a chance does a civilian have. Also mentioned how it is solely up to his discretion still. Sounds like they arent completly in line with the developments of Peruta.

All in all a pretty discouraging meeting. I hope this will all pan out with Peruta someday soon so that people like Sheriff Moore would not have the "discretion" to grant a CCW, but be forced to follow a set of guidelines on who does and does not qualify.
In all fairness to the Sheriff he could have just denied you, he set up a meeting for you to convince him otherwise. Sounds like you blew the interview. But you never know..

I read these posts each week to assess the progress of the SO processing of my CCW application (May 14). I'm sure most posters have good intentions but I cringe every time I see the avatar of "slayer61" (post #1856). I may be 'old school' and don't get it, but a Santa Claus holding a gun on a terrified three year old is not funny!

It's in bad taste, isn't it? Good thing we have 1st amendment rights as well as 2nd!

Lol the sad part is I was thinking the same thing. I don't really care what it is just goes to show how much you have "matured" since your high school days "long ago". I am also of the younger group and have 0 run-ins with the police (other then speeding) and am worried about my application. With your record I would still try but would not be completely surprised when I was denied. Good Luck

First interview May 13th. have you heard anything from your may 14th interview I have had 0 contact since initial interview all my training is complete just waiting on my email/phone call.
