This sounds like an extremely vague and broad restriction and like it could probably be abused. Does this refer to prescription pain meds as well as OTC pain meds? Allergy medication? Anti-depressants? Anti-depressants that are prescribed for the purpose of quitting smoking? Caffeine? Antacids? How far does it go?

The language in the Sac Sherrif CCW info page just says "no illegal drug use". That one seems a lot better. Please advice, thanks.
You have a valid concern. As with any vague statement, one like this certainly can be abused. While there is no specific, detailed answer to the question that harbinger007 asked, all anyone can do is speculate as to the intent of the rule. Unfortunately, speculation is precisely as it sounds, not entirely valid or solid information. My speculation concludes that anyone who carries/uses their gun while on medication that obviously alters their appearance, coordination, behavior or potentially a number of other physiological and/or psychological attributes, is running the risk of violating this and/or, at the very least, risking being run through the mill as a test dummy. The only good news to an incident as such would be that you will get a more specific definition of this rule. Just be sure that you're not that guy!

Cool, and this lines right up with my assumption as well. From the Merced thread, here is Librarian's opinion

Merced and some other counties include a restriction from being 'under the influence of any medication, whether prescription or not'.

Now, certainly there are psycho-active drugs that influence judgement, and other drugs that influence alertness and reflexes, and perhaps one ought to voluntarily refrain from CCW if such medications are required, just as one might refrain from driving. But the scope of that requirement language includes aspirin for a headache and anti-fungal cream for athlete's foot.

Perhaps at some future date 'under the influence' might be clarified.

      Anyway, nicely done!

ETA - the driving analogy actually looks pretty solid. Vehicle Code 312:
      312. The term "drug" means any substance or combination of
substances, other than alcohol, which could so affect the nervous
system, brain, or muscles of a person as to impair, to an appreciable
degree, his ability to drive a vehicle in the manner that an
ordinarily prudent and cautious man, in full possession of his
faculties, using reasonable care, would drive a similar vehicle under
      like conditions.
It does rely on people being 'ordinarily prudent and cautious', always perilous in these times.
So here is my concern still: during the interview, are they going to ask about such medication and could such a prescription be used as justification for denial. Nobody wants to lie to the sheriff during an interview you know?

Yup, keep refreshing, especially around holidays & times like valentines day. Also, the Letter of Statement is exactly as simple as we are all saying...one sentence, name at the end. Thats it! Kind of silly, but required.

I tried to click on each of those three days in December - it says that there aren't any available appointments on those days, even though they are green... =\

I will be checking the website several times a day looking for cancellations.

So I just picked up a appointment for tomorrow morning. But I haven't done class or anything else. So my question is, if I get the first approval letter (WHICH I HOPE I DO) how long do you have to get everything done, like the classes and live scan?

Also do I have to put the handguns I'm going to use on my first application?

From the date posted on your SSO ccw application approval letter (not the date your received the letter) you have 30 days to complete your livescan.
I believe training is only your last requirement, which isn't rewuired to be completed within that 30day window.

You can list up to 3 handguns you want to have on your ccw. You will also need to qualify with each handgun during your ccw training (likely the training academy will charge you per extra handgun)

                        Good luck!

One more spot has opened up for tomorrow at 2pm. I can't make it, but I hope somebody here can!

I'm going to pick up my first handgun later this month, practice with it a whole lot and hope to shark an appointment sometime in March or April.

Congratulations! I hope to be the lucky winner of "the right to keep and bear arms" lottery at some point! LOL. Yea, that actually isn't funny at all =\ Could you report back here with your experience with the sheriff? Like what kind of questions they ask, what the interview process is like and all that. I'm hoping they drop the interview requirement soon, what is it they hope to 'weed out' with an interview that a background check won't find? Scary-looking scars? Crazy eyes? I long for the day when America starts to value rights again. Oh well, it's going to be a long battle.

I didn't know you live in Sac. Hit me up sometime for a range trip! I try to make it out to Yolo Sportsmen or the Cordova Shooting Center once a month or so.
