CongratsI picked up my permit today!
Timeline:
3/10/15 - Called for interview
7/9/15 - Interviewed
7/15/15 - Livescan
10/7/15 - File went upstairs for review
11/1/15 - Received preliminary approval
11/7/15 - CCW Classroom at Ben Clark
12/9/15 - CCW Range Qual at Ben Clark
1/29/16 - Called to pick up permit
Some comments: I went the preliminary approval route because I wasn't sure about my Good Cause, and didn't want to buy a compact gun and pay for training before I was sure. So that added three months to my wait, partly because for whatever reason Clark didn't do a range Qual in November.
It turns out they are more generous in approval of GCs than I thought. I had sent my GC to the guy in Orange County that CalGuns says is THE guy to review GC statements, and he said mine wouldn't fly in Riverside. So I tweaked it a bit (not much at all) and it worked. All of that to say that I think Riverside is more permissive than in the past.
Note that Cal DOJ Livescan took just short of 3 months, and Riverside admin review only 3 weeks.Comment

Range qualifications here are simple. The staff is awesome and they're helpful. Be sure to follow every rule they set!

Get MOST of them on paper and don't shoot the rangemaster and you are GTG. As with the range at Ben Clark, they are looking more at safe gun handling and adequate knowledge with the gun than anything else. They were really helpful when I qualled.sigpic

FTA
Yeah, I've used them. Don't care for them one bit. Your shooting will be easy, if you know what you are doing, but there is SO much attitude from these guys. They all think their **** dont stink. They all think they are drill sergeants and hard core tacticool guys, and they're just not. I have seen them be so unprofessional to the people who are paying them it is ridiculous. From foul language, to unneccessary yelling, it's one big ego trip for them. They have no idea of what professionalism means.Comment

I've taken several classes at FTA. This has not been my experience. I would say they are opposite of this description. I have noticed their demeanor can be different depending on the make-up and type of class. However, I've never known them to be unprofessional. Safety is heavily reinforced in the Beginner Classes. In the Intermediate and Advanced Classes it's expected and when needed, reinforced.Yeah, I've used them. Don't care for them one bit. Maybe give them another try? Everyone has an off day.WTB - S&W 310 or 610 10MM Revolver.

I used them for my initial class. I was put off by some of the incorrect information that they presented in the class. When in doubt they always leaned towards less risk, which is better than the alternative. However, at some point legal is legal. A loaded magazine by itself is not a loaded firearm in CA. I don't care what police academy they graduated from 30 years ago.
The shooting instruction was decent, but highly compressed in format and practice. A couple of their instructors seemed great, but 1 in particular had the "tacticool" attitude and went out of his way to make snarky comments at people doing things differently than his method (i.e. Weaver, etc). I never could tell if he was being a DB or just really bad at joking.
I think the best bang-for-your-buck basic through intermediate training is through Frontsight if you want training. If you just want to renew, go through Ben Clark and save your money for ammo.If you are wondering if you can get a LTC in Riverside County: THE ANSWER IS YES!

The last time we had a VERY packed meeting, there were some people arriving around 6:30. I would say around that time should be good. Usually it is very casual, just stroll up, sign in, grab some food, and chit chat a bit until the meeting starts. When it is more busy, there is a line to sign in and many new people asking questions and such, slowing things down a good amount."Fight like you're the third monkey trying to get on Noah's Ark...".
The only thing that matters is rallying our cause to fight the enemy relentlessly, indifferent to the outcome of any particular battleComment

I have taken a few classes from them including my CCW training and have not found the to be difficult to work with in slightest. I think the guys at FTA are very helpful and professional. They do get on your case if they spot something you are doing that is unsafe but that is not something I would have an issue with after everyone out there has a loaded gun in their hand. safety should be the first priority.Yeah, I've used them. I spoke with a nice lady on the general info line and she indicated that the two deputies responsible for the complete CCW process are inundated with calls, for obvious reasons.
She recommended leaving a message and they will return your call at their earliest convenience, usually the following day.
General document drop off, is between 8 and 5, but they recommended calling first as they are very busy (interviews, etc.) and may want to give you guidance or clarification when accepting documents.Real Californian...Comment
