If you have two firearms alike and the same caliber but only one on the permit can you carry the other as a back up if the first needs repair? I did look on a couple of sheriff websites but
    did not see the answer.

No, they are also specified by serial number on the permit.

I have wondered if the sheriff could, or would, list one model/caliber with two serial numbers...

Thanks for the answer, IMO there is no reason for the county to only allow you to only defend your self with a weapon that is only listed by serial number. Its just another law that does nothing
for safety. I can to a degree understand why they want you to be proficient with the firearm you carry but if you have two that are alike it should not be a problem from a common sense point
          of view.

It's part of the penal code. It's not a county policy.

You are likely the most knowledgeable person regarding the RivCo process at this time. I don't doubt that you are more current on info than anyone.

However, having been in this system of RivCo CCW for quite some time, I can say truthfully that the system has only been as you know it for a relatively short time.

The reality a few short years ago was that only people with GC's of a business nature were being approved. Yes, there was an atmosphere of discouragement from the department. Not from the level of Aguirre and Yezzo (they have always been great to deal with), but from the policy makers above them. People were not being misled by those "in the know". This was truly the situation.

The low number of permits in the past is a direct reflection of the department itself, not a simple fear of applying.

The positive note is that this situation appears to have changed, and more "regular" people are applying and getting approved. Just realize that there were others before you that likely laid the groundwork for the change we are seeing today.

Thanks for all you do to further the cause and help applicants through the process.
Let me take a minute out of my busy day to salute this post. You are absolutely correct lawaia. I tried to obtain my ccw a few years ago in Riverside county and was turned away. They were only accepting good cause of the business nature.

You are correct but the code does not put a limit on how many weapons or the caliber or any qualifications to have a certain firearm listed. I see no reason why you cant call the sheriff and give
them the SN of any weapon you may acquire or need to carry in a emergency. Anyone who has a permit should be trusted to give that info without even coming in right away.

I can see at some point having to qualify with the new numbers added to the list and I can understand setting a limit at some point but overall it should not be a major problem IMO.

It's called liability. If you get involved in a shooting, no matter how legitimate, the person you shot or their family will probably sue you. They will also try to bring in the county as they have more money than most of us.

The county will have to show that they complied with minimum state requirements and maybe some of their own which go above and beyond to cover themselves from a liability standpoint and their justification in authorizing you to carry within the state. They will be able to say that you demonstrated proficiency with the exact particular firearm listed by serial number and caliber (Riverside will also allow you to carry only the caliber the firearm was dros under. So no changing from 40 S&W to 357 Sig in the same weapon despite serial number. Both are listed on the back of your permit). I know the rules may seem dumb, and some are. But if you want to carry, you go by their rules. The process is actually very easy. Some hoops yes, but at least under current administration they are issuing to us regular people. I too was told several years ago that my good cause would probably not got through. Same good cause now accepted.

I also put 6 on mine as you have 2 years before you have to renew to see what works for you and what doesn't. I agree that bigger gun for the car versus smaller gun in a holster or in your pocket. If you are concerned about muscle memory, choose firearms that all go bang without using a manual safety or guns that all have to have a safety defeated first. Many of my home defense weapons have safeties on them, 1911, 870, 1100, mini 14, AR's. Carry guns are all sight alignment and squeeze. If I throw a 1911 in the mix, I might forget a step under stress. My 1911's are big and heavy so I chose not to list those. Pick and choose what works for you.

Just received my approval call! Unfortunately I'm heading out of town for a backpacking trip so I won't be able to pick it up until Tuesday.

Picked up mine today. I interviewed on May 14th. I don't know the timeline for the different steps but I was told 2 weeks ago that the package went up. So about 4 months total.
