So can I conclude that I can use friends or colleagues (or even my ex wife lol) to write the letters? It doesn't have to be some government official right? I'm also going to use self-defense as my GC - hopefully that will be accepted. Thanks guys.

You are correct, the reference letters can be from friends, colleagues, acquaintances, shooting buddies, calgunners, etc. Just not family or employers. The letters hold almost no weight in the judgment process, so just gather 3 and call it a day. Let us know what other questions you have. Have you already scheduled your appointment?

I just called and scheduled my initial interview. They didn't have any slots till June. I am not submitting any reference letters with my application. I was told to articulate self defense by the deputy on the phone. What do you guys think should I articulate or just keep Self Defense?

I just had a quick question if you don't mind. I live in Riverside and picked up my application from the Riverside Police Department station. I noticed that a lot of people are making reference to Riverside County when turning in their application paperwork but was curious if anyone has turned in their application to the city of Riverside PD? If so, has the process been the same or am I simply confused and everyone who is turning in an application is turning them in to the Riverside City Police Department instead of the Riverside County Sheriffs Dept.

It's highly likely that there will be some changes between now and June. I would keep up with this thread as well as the FixRiverside thread in my sig for those changes between now and your interview.

There is no requirement in Riverside County to apply to the police department first. For that reason (and most of us don't live in Riverside city) most of us have been applying to the Sheriffs department. I'm not aware of the current policies at Riverside PD for issuing permits or if they even are. Hopefully someone will come along that has that info for you. But you could always apply with the county as well.

Thanks Sleighter! I'm gathering all the necessary documents now, then I'll make the appointment (most likely Monday).

I wouldn't worry about hurrying to get everything together. They aren't accepting applications until June currently. So you've got 3-4 months to get your paperwork together.

What is the total cost? According to the web site, I need character references as well. I scheduled my interview for mid July. The officer was very sarcastic on the phone and stated that I sounded like I was unsure of myself several times before giving me an appointment whilemhe took notes regarding my answers. I got the feeling he felt like I was wasting his time. Since the web site is not up to date, will they also require a mental eval?

Which officer did you talk to? I haven't experienced any sarcasm from the folks I've talked to there. Also, when I called for an appointment, he gave me a date and time, and that was it. There were no questions asked. So if anything is changing about how they (or at least that officer) are interacting with applicants, that's something we all need to know.

They did not require a mental evaluation for my application, and I haven't heard of them being required for anybody else.

                          Ditto.

And fees are on page 13 of the application. http://www.riversidesheriff.org/pdf/...ccw-noform.pdf

$195.00 plus the class through RCSO is $100.

ETA: Plus whatever Livescan cost is these days.

What questions did they ask that they took notes of? Also, the fees are in the application packet but here's the breakdown:

                            Admin fee: $100
                            Livescan fee: $95
                            Livescan operator fee: $10
Training fee: $100-250 (depending on where you get the training done)

Both deputies are very helpful and will answer any questions you have. I and many others here have had no issues. I just wish there were more than two deputies handaling ccw.

Wait....why did you call if you carry without a permit anyways? You've said in numerous threads that you carry w/o a permit because it's your right. What made you change your mind? And don't get me wrong, I'm glad that you've decided to be legal, but I wonder if something like what you said below came up in your phone call?

In the EXTREMELY RARE instance you are caught with a legally owned and registered concealed firearm that you have no CCW for, the maximum if no other violations are present is a minor misdemeanor according to a deputy DA I am related to. This is also confirmed by my cousin's husband who is a drug interdiction detective. Any LEO's feel free if I got this wrong, but I am confident I am on the money on this.
