Yea... They definitely should. It seems like there is some confusion right now. Hopefully, things will be clearer as time goes by. Either with better instructions from the Sheriff's Office or with information from applicants who have gone through the process.

I remember watching a YouTube video recently where Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco and a Deputy in charge of CCWs were talking about how they changed their policy from allowing live scans performed by outside vendors to having applicants perform live scans exclusively at the Sheriff's Office. Their reasoning was that they were having trouble getting live scan results for some of the live scans performed by outside vendors and they would not be able to do much because they did not process the live scan. Then, the applicant would have to pay and get another live scan done, and they would get frustrated with the Sheriff's Office.

I just assume that some of the other agencies might have similar policies in place due to similar reasons.

Haha. No problem! Yea, I'm afraid they will have another round of leaks in the future when more people get CCW permits.

          1. The live fire drill is pretty basic. 48 rounds / weapon. I believe it's a TQ19 target, or a variant there of, and you need to keep 80% of the rounds inside the hit area. 3, 7, 10y, if I remember correctly. All from a holstered gun. Any reasonable calgunner should pass.

          2. The class is a full-day, run by deputies, at the Coyote point range, going through laws, use of force etc, rounding off with the range qual. Not sure how this will scale moving forward.

          3. For the initial application, the live scan wasnt done until after you had gone through the process and completed your interview. It was done down at the SD office in RC, no external scans allowed.

So I work up the street from the Sheriff's. Think they would get annoyed if I go in and ask about the LiveScan portion?

Edit: Nevermind. just read Gose's 3rd bullet point

Any of you reach out to the sheriff for any updates? Even SF and Contra Costa seem to have setup interviews..

That's a good point- even though the agencies are sorting out the "new", they sure know a bunch, a whole bunch, of interviews are a'coming. So get started!

I reckon getting a new Sheriff is setting things back as well no?

Oh 100%. Also I'm 99% sure they are waiting for that SB918 bill to get passed which basically increases all the requirements and severely limits your ability to carry anywhere. I bet we don't hear back for months. It may be worth people emailing them and pushing given that both SCOTUS and DOJ CA have said it's effectively immediately. Counties like SF even have appointment signups as part of the application process where as SM doesn't.

                        Thanks for the input!

Forgive what might be a dumb question but when you say from a holstered gun do you need to qualify with the one you carry with? If you have a couple depending on what you wear are you free to switch them out once approved? Can an OWB be used? Are extra mag holders or a minimum amount of magazines required? (I totally understand if some / all of this isn't known until someone goes thought the process more recently)

Any recommendations on a good training class in the area with people knowledge about the process? I figure something like that can't hurt when they are looking for a reason to not issue.

No question they are stalling for SB 918 to pass with a whole slew of restrictions it brings.

I did respond to the initial email I received (from reserve deputy and two cc'd san mateo county sheriff officers) explicitly asking if they were processing applications or waiting for SB 918 to pass. While I have minimal expectations of a response, I do think it is important to respectfully communicate that we are here and waiting.

NO fee increase SCOTUS Said the costs already prevent normal or people of lesser means retired or salary of 1500 a month or disabled people making it unaffordable.

The exorbitant fees will prevent you from receiving a permit. I think the new fees are 160 Psy 300-500 Training 16 hours and 200+ for the permit not including fuel and travel and ammo your looking at 660 to 900 Total at the end of the day.

Quick follow up. I did receive a response from Casey.

                                My question:
"Casey, Thanks for volunteering your time to the San Mateo community. Good stuff.
Let me know if there is any follow up required on my part. Also, I am sure you are inundated with applications but I wanted to check is there a current plan of record to moving forward with applications or is the department waiting for the bill in process (SB 918) to be completed?"

                                Response:
"I have no idea and will advise when I know the next step(s). You would need to call the sheriff's administration to find out their plan for SB 918."
