Keep checking back for an improved date. Note that the Sheriff has been issuing permits for a good four years, give or take. There was no need to wait for Bruen.

Try to reschedule right now. I had a July 2023 appointment, but it looks like they just opened up some appointment slots for next month and I was able to move mine up to a few weeks from now.

I got my application in today and was blown away at the fist available being July 2023. I regret dragging my feet after SCOTUS decision. I’m hoping there’s a way to get into something earlier if openings pop up (not sure if that’s a thing). Anyways, thanks for all the information here. Just getting into exercising my right!

The process takes awhile and particularly as more people are applying because of the recent SCOTUS decision. So the sooner the better. If you're waiting because you're not yet 21, however, that makes sense.

The interviews aren't really actual interviews. They're more so the clerks can clarify any necessary information in your application packet...Unless you've got something questionable in your backgroud. Then they might talk to you a bit about that.

In theory, your age...or the length of time you've been a gun owner...should not matter. You have the same rights as anyone else. Understand, however, that things are still shaking out from the recent SCOTUS decision. They can no longer require a "good cause" from you. But the tyrants in Sacramento are currently revising the overall state requirements, and trying to place greater emphasis on "good moral character." This is clearly unconstitutional but it's going to take some time to challenge it and get it struck down.

Good moral character is a VERY subjective opinion and gives the Sheriff a LOT of leeway to essentially do whatever he wants with an applicant. But if you're in good legal standing, don't have a history of mental issues, etc., you should be ok.

If anything comes up about being a new gun owner, or young, you can likely offset this by taking a training class or two. But I really don't think this will be an issue. There were several new gun owners in my initial CCW class and and my subsequent renewal class. It didn't seem like it was an issue at all.

    Good luck!

Submitting ASAP is almost always preferred. Waiting will just make you look back and wish you had started earlier. Length of time of being a firearms owner shouldn't effect the decision or delay the process as far as I know. For the interview bring any and all paperwork you can neatly organized. Proof of residency bills? Bring all of them from the time you apply to when your interview occurs, any legal interactions that you note on your application? Bring copies of the actual documents (police report, court docs, restraining orders) if you think you might need it, bring it. I had mine in a envelope file with tabs for organization. When they asked for something I gave it. As far as questions I'm not sure what they are going over now with the Bonta guidance of no good cause statements.

Called a girl named Theresa at SD Sheriffs Lic Div and asked her if they had cameras and audio recording at their location which usually all govt offices have. I asked if I could record my dealings with them with my own video. She stated she did not know answer to either query. I was but on hold and she said that they have no cameras and that applicants could not record dealings with them. How can this be legal and transparent? I say this because Ed Peruta started this off in circa 2009 and put his recording of his dealing with SDSO Licensing on the internet. Very embarrassing for them and I seriously doubt that they can legally ban recording ones application interview. To be continued at a later date.
