Just a tip for you younger than 21 crowd. Make sure you have a proof of residency before your 21st. It sucks when you can't buy a handgun because you don't have the 2nd PoR so you'll just settle to wait an extra month for you C&R FFL to get to you so you can use that as your 2nd PoR

Turning 21 in roughly 1 year. Already have my XD45, and HK USP Compact 45, and a variety of 1911's passed down to me from my grandfather.

When I went to my local gun store to drop off a few shotguns to get worked on, I figured I would take the HSC so I can get my handguns xferred into my name...passed the test no problem, was issued my card, and chatted up the owner. Well it came up that i wasnt 21, and he freaked out, and refused to issue it to me. I explained the situation and he called the DOJ...gosh that was a head ache. But its all sorted out, and some education happened in the process

        That pisses me off

The DOJ's webite states exactly this:

Are there any minimum qualifications/requirements for a person who wants to take the Handgun Safety Certificate (HSC) test?
The only requirements are that the Handgun Safety Certificate (HSC) applicant must be at least 18 years of age and must present clear evidence of identity and age by presenting a California Driver's License or California Department of Motor Vehicles Identification Card.

and if I remember correctly, the HSC study guide states the same

        Dear California,
I love you. I was born and raised in you. You have given me some of the best times of my life. Now with that said, I can not wait to move!

The really funny part was that he asked for the card back, and my drivers license, thinking he had written it down wrong, but really he wrote everything down 100% correct.

I wanted to walk out with is so I didn't laugh, but man, he was having a freak out.

When I took mine, the girl told me, "You know this doesn't apply to you right?" Lol, I explained it to her and she gave me my card. She just wanted to make sure I didn't waste my 25 bucks!

My guy I could tell was worried about losing his FFL or getting in trouble. He was freaking out. We didnt get through to the DOJ when I was at the store, so he told me he would hold it until he got a call back. He called me right as they were closing and I picked it up the next day.

I wasn't too annoyed, because not too many people know that an 18 year old can legally own a handgun, they just assume since you have to be 21 to buy one, you would have to be 21 to own and get a HSC.

Well I turned 21 last Saturday.

I put a deposit down on parked SA GI earlier this month but I haven't had chance to DROS it yet since my b-day. I should be able to do it tomorrow and start the longest 10 days of my life.

                ETA:
Meanwhile, here is one of the birthday gifts to myself

                          I will be 21 in 78 days...

Already eyeing my P226R in .40 with nightsights and TLR-2 with anticipation.

I have 2 handguns to play with including a 1911, but I want my 226!

Also looking forward to buying my stripped lower.

21 on Jan 4th! Just got my AR15 few weeks ago. Possible culprits are SA 1911, XD40, G22/G23. So until then, just gotta do my research and figure it out! Can't wait!

now i just gave my mother the money and she bought a SA MC Operator for me we both took the HSC certificate test. but the dealer i went to said i couldnt be issued the certificate cause i wasn't 21 even after reading all that i could get it and transfer it to my name from her. does anyone know where i can get a number to call to confirm this is true or not i know you guys have had it happen to you and it is possible but i just wana make it's concrete to these guys when we go to pick the gun up so i can just show them that i can and that it is possible for me to get a HSC take the test again and get the certificate. if they still wont let me then i can always go else where to get the HSC.

I have a sig p6 on layaway right now, can't wait to DROS it.
The only thing I'm worried about is the handgun safety demonstration. How the hell am I supposed to do it if I'm not even familiar with handguns, do they teach you first?
