    Certainly true!
Also, though, while still here on earth in this earthly form, we strive to understand, and the C vs. A debate is based on that striving.

And, by the way, theology is not a dirty word. It simply is the study of God. or for those who study some other god other than the God Who created the universe, the God of the Bible; the study of god little g.

We ALL have a theology. We all believe something about God or god. Through faith in Christ and study of God's word, we can gain a correct understanding which is, then, finally, a correct theology. and that is not a dirty word.

I agree, theology is not a dirty word but it's not a faith ether.
There are people who are saved, born again and can't even read a single passage of Scripture however their own testimony makes them a walking Bible study (living epistle). All that without ever engaging in a theological school of thought.

Calvin is best read when he has a tiger as a best friend named Hobbs. The other "Calvin" was something of a despot and Theocrat who made 16th century Geneva pretty not-fun place to live (just ask Michael Servetus). And his teachings gave rise to the Puritans, a really not-fun group of people, and a notable dude named Cromwell, who is still rightly despised in Ireland to this day ("to hell or to Connaught").

The better Calvin and his tiger are far more fun to read, teach more heart warming and timeless lessons about the wonders of life, an no one gets burned at the stake.

If you want to have arguments that burn people at the stake don't make mindless claims about people that you nothing about. The Puritans were not "not fun" people. They produced many generations of people who founded a nation on a new continent in a wilderness. To pretend they were stupid and "not fun" is just stupid. Educate yourself before making lame statements.

Well the only thing I can say is that the discussion always turns into someone putting a torch in Calvin's hand. Fact is Calvin didn't run Geneva there were civil authorities and they convicted the heretic. Calvin visited him and tried to get him to recant.Calvin asked that Servetus not be burned at the stake (he did ask for the sword) but his wishes didn't come about.
Calvin didn't like people being burned at the stake which I believe goes back to an experience he had while still in France. Someone was preaching to him (I believe the group were called Gospeler's?) and at a later time he saw a crowd gathered down the street and when he went down to see what was going on he saw that same person on the stake by way of the Catholics which had an impact on him.

What's funny (not humorous) is that he would probably been burned by the Catholics as he was in custody, but escape and went to Geneva. I'm not trying to make Calvin out to be some sinless person because he wasn't.

(Going by memory on this if I'm in error I will accept correction and give resources for my information)

Apart from this the question is are the Doctrines of Grace true and founded on Scripture.

              Hi Dave,

I agree with a lot of what you say but (yeah isn't there always a but) if we use your example of someone who can't read we have to ask, what does this person believe. If he believes in God and Christ died for sinners and by placing his faith in Him he can have everlasting life, he had to have been told this by someone. What he was told was Theology (Christology, Soteriology etc) And wouldn't this person be under a Pastor who would teach him more Theology.

Yes, I spotted that. Faith comes by hearing and by hearing the word of God. It's faith that accounts for us righteousness, no theological study is needed.

And CalGuns? We should be so lucky.

Just joking of course (maybe), but the C vs. A thing was debated long before you got here and had ran its course. Most of us who have been here for a while have learned to agree to disagree on the various topics we feel strongly about.

Funny how King Henry hijacked the church because he wanted to divorce with no biblical grounds to do so.
So using his government authority he changed the terms of marriage and facilitated that using the CoE.

                              Sound familiar?

The official religion in England was Roman Catholicism so what he cast off and what replaced it became a good thing. I say became because there was not much difference at first.

Here's Article 17 of the Church of England which is Calvinistic

                                XVII. Of Predestination and Election

Predestination to Life is the everlasting purpose of God, whereby (before the foundations of the world were laid) he hath constantly decreed by his counsel secret to us, to deliver from curse and damnation those whom he hath chosen in Christ out of mankind, and to bring them by Christ to everlasting salvation, as vessels made to honour. Wherefore, they which be endued with so excellent a benefit of God be called according to God's purpose by his Spirit working in due season: they through Grace obey the calling: they be justified freely: they be made sons of God by adoption: they be made like the image of his only-begotten Son Jesus Christ: they walk religiously in good works, and at length, by God's mercy, they attain to everlasting felicity.

As the godly consideration of Predestination, and our Election in Christ, is full of sweet, pleasant, and unspeakable comfort to godly persons, and such as feel in themselves the working of the Spirit of Christ, mortifying the works of the flesh, and their earthly members, and drawing up their mind to high and heavenly things, as well because it doth greatly establish and confirm their faith of eternal Salvation to be enjoyed through Christ, as because it doth fervently kindle their love towards God: So, for curious and carnal persons, lacking the Spirit of Christ, to have continually before their eyes the sentence of God's Predestination, is a most dangerous downfal, whereby the Devil doth thrust them either into desperation, or into wretchlessness of most unclean living, no less perilous than desperation.

Furthermore, we must receive God's promises in such wise, as they be generally set forth to us in holy Scripture: and, in our doings, that Will of God is to be followed, which we have expressly declared unto us in the Word of God.
