I've never even been in OT because I know places like that cater to certain kind of individuals and 'discussions' get out of hand fast.

From the last few comments here I see previous OT discussions likely fueled some of the passion in the discussion here. I don't post in the LEO forum either but was a bit surprised when I got jumped on for what I think is a pretty moderate opinion. Civility can quickly be lost typing semi-anonymously. I try not to type anything I wouldn't personally say to someone's face.

I have posted in this thread, and wasn't exactly patting LEOs on the back with my comments either. But my comments are in line with he topic, and experiences I have had.
Good or bad, these guys (LEOs) are just trying to do a difficult job. Some are jaded by the seemingly unwinnable/unending task, others have egos that get inflated by their role.
But many officers do a very hard job very well.
A few not so much - and that kills public perception, which in turn makes the job even more difficult.
Here is the quote and the thread it came from:

Possible. Many times, people will flow out of OT and into here thinking that they can pull the same crap and the gloves won't come off. Theoretically, the rules in here are tighter, and the LEO will tolerate less because this is supposed to be a respite from the rest of the BS on the site.

I don't tolerate any of it. I dismiss it outright as unworthy of response.

As a LEO I will not associate with violent extremists or hate groups. This site is going that way.

I don't know what kind of people they are hiding behind the keyboard and say a lot of garbage. I am surprised to see this. I didn't know. Maybe those people who have that kind of mind set should say it to the face of an LEO, if they have guts to say it.

On this site, I observed a lot of the members that dislike cops because they are jealous that they cannot ccw, unable to get a ccw, unable to become a LEO (whatever reason it may be), or they had a bad experience (detained or arrested).

Lots of law abiding ccw holders are pro-police. Just my observation.

I had a very lengthy post addressing exactly this in a different thread, but that thread seems to have been poofed away.

Hey kermit315. I posted a comment in one of the OT threads you've participated in before it got hectic. Here is a direct link to my comment:

I had a feeling that the discussion was going to jump off the tracks and I was really interested to discuss the topic at hand. I guess mine either got lost in the shuffle, or no one cared to comment lol. Maybe both? Oh well.

When ever numbers are used to support someone's claim, it's really important to cite their sources. That's the basics of a thesis/essay. What's as important is for those sources to be from a globally accepted entity (i.e. FBI, DOJ, etc). Otherwise, it's hyperbole. So your frustration hasn't fallen on deaf ears.

I like participating in this forum because it's got a diverse group of people. It's the only place I feel comfortable having a civil discussion with anyone in LE.

For what it's worth, most civilians don't want bad things to happen to those in uniform. Unfortunately, negativity gets more air time in the media. So for those that don't know anyone in LE, that's their only frame of reference. I try to remain objective. For those like me that had 1 bad experience. Yea, I was upset at the time, but I got over it. I just chose not to allow that person to influence that way I interact with other people in LE. Otherwise, that jerk wins.

I stay out of those threads because they just seem to always unravel and get stupid. But that quote above just made me sick. I saw no point in responding to it only because as stated (and what I thought would happen) it was left without repercusions.

I am NOT LEO but they have my respect.

I thank you.. Sometimes, it is a tough job with no one appreciates what an LEO does.

Even one thank you is worth it for me.

Indeed. Its good to be reminded that most of the "silent majority" are good people, the type I'd share a beer with or an afternoon at the range.

Urban legends are a poor basis for making public policy.

I've been watching this thread since it started. Wow the number of branches the topic has spread to. These threads are good. You see the personalities of all levels of LEO's in a more civilized environment.

IMO, it would be very educational to the younger, early to mid 20's generation to seriously analyze and understand these threads before trying to join up. A lot of those young people (people in general) have no idea what the LE world actually entails and often go in for the wrong reasons. Some of these folks clear self-funded academies and never clear the initial application phase let alone an oral panel.

Maybe my seniors here should direct the hopefuls posting in the forum asking about the academy or the career to these threads. It may open their eyes and help them to determine if they should proceed. We all know that it takes a certain personality and that personality is often not present or still undeveloped.

                          Be safe.

I want to preface this comment as I don't feel it applies to all, or most LE persons, but this was my experience this morning.

I had to go to my local Sheriff Substation to have a federal fingerprint form filled out. When I got to the desk, the woman (presumably not a LEO, but a civilian representative/desk worker) had an absolutely horrible attitude, was contentious and short with me in regards just the most basic of conversation with regard to my request.
She was abrupt and rough when manhandling my hand to do the fingerprinting. I am a 6" 240lb guy so she wasn't hurting my wittle feewings, but still, she was way to rough to be treating someone that is entirely compliant and actually making the request for the fingerprinting service - which I paid for btw ... It was more like "what the hell lady, something get into your cereal today ???"
She had horrible technique, and a worse attitude. God forbid she had to get her keester up of her poor overloaded chair. It was quite apparent her (lack of) technique was awful and she was having difficulty performing my fingerprinting she smudged/ruined it twice. As she was screwing up my right hand fingerprints by dragging my hand toward her on my left, I suggested instead of dragging my whole body around her, that maybe we switch sides so my arm wouldn't be getting wrapped around her (obese) body as she was performing the printing.
She said she was right handed and would not do it. Instead, she stammered "do you want me to get someone else?" To which I said that would be fine.
                            She didn't.

She was so busy being rude, she didn't even finish the printing procedure correctly and I had to remind her that she was not done, that she had to witness my signature, and she had to be the one sealing the envelope.

We finished, and not so much as a "you are done!" She just waddled away.

                            What an incredible B.
I felt like telling her, "If you don't like your job, go get a different one lady. Nobody is forcing you to be like that".

This is for a federal contract and was the Federal Fingerprinting form. (FF258 - from what I recall).

I am not a criminal. I am a uniformed civil servant also, but was not in uniform as this is a personal duty not affiliated with my current employer.

Instances like this are just a glimpse of public interactions with LE entities that degrade any positive attitudes the public (myself in this instance) have about our LE personnel and the ubiquitous aversion to any contact with them whatsoever. Sadly, I am in that same boat.

                            Kind of like this.
I stand behind LEOs and the job they do, but I do not want to be standing in front of them while they do it ( in other words, I don't want to be the subject of their contact).

As a matter of my job, daily I too interact with with challenging people with great regularity (Inmates, Pt in custody, 5150s, altered, combative, ETOH/Drugs, and so on.).

I understand it can be frustrating. But I also bother to try and tell the difference between someone that is a problem, and someone that is not.
I deal with people in distress, wounded, injured, or otherwise ill, and desperately needing my help.
Some of them are lame, mean, frustrating, etc, and I too get pissed at some of them, but my mode is to be cool and nice to all my patients. Crappy attitude gets in the way of progress.
Apparently she felt different about this approach.

Regardless, that nonsense I just dealt with at Vista's Substation was uncalled for.

Some people need to be reminded that they can be fired for being bad employees.
Or maybe she can't, and that is the root to the problem ...

                            Mini rant over,

                            As you were.
