Surprised no one mentioned Oakland. They went from .40 to 9mm Glocks last year. Shortly after doing so they reissued their .40 handguns and recalled all the newly issued Gen 4 9mm Glocks.

          Anyone know why this happened?

When newly released, the 9mm Gen4 had issues with the recoil spring and ejector. Glock has since issued replacement parts and the problem seems to have been fixed.

Several guys at my department have gone from 40 and 45 cal Glocks to 9mm Glock..I was very interested in why they were doing this. The three guys I have talked to all said pretty much the same thing..wanted to carry more rounds, and wanted to lighten up their duty belt (45 cal specific). I am happy with my G21, but I do notice the weight of my mags after 12 hours!

I recently switched from a Glock to a M&P9 and really like it so far.

Slightly off topic, but I have a question for Biochembruin.
My Son is interested in the XD9. He is not in LE, but he did have some training on the Beretta M9 while in the Navy. He is a pretty decent shot, but not interested in the latest and greatest. He just wants to shoot what he likes.
His only gun to date is the old Colt Trooper I bought him for his 21st B-Day. My guns are mostly all steel semi-autos or revolvers.
In your opinion, is the XD9 as reliable as the Glock?
Is the maintenance and cleaning more or less difficult on XD9 vs. G17?
We both like the feel of the XD better than Glock. However, I do believe that Glock has set the bar for reliability and ease of maintenance.
Your thoughts are both welcome and appreciated.
                      Thank you.

I wouldn't purport to know something I don't. My experience with the XD9 is minimal, so I can't really compare it to the Glock. LAPD doesn't use the XD9. From my minimal experience, and having spoken with people who have the XD9, it is very reliable, but the trigger is not so hot out of the box. If your son enjoys shooting the XD9 better than the Glock, then he should probably go with the XD9. Since he's not a LEO, he doesn't have to worry about what weapon is authorized for him to carry on duty.

Since you ask about the XD9, LAPD did recently test it, and the M&P series of handguns, as well as a few other makes. I was not involved in the testing, and no decision has been made as to what, if anything, will replace the Glock. Keep in mind though, that when a department issues a weapon, there are many considerations besides reliability.

                          Hello, Bio.

I'm not a LEO, but for self defense, I'm a 9mm JHP guy all the way. I use Federal HST after seeing the results in these tests:

Thank you for your total honesty. I knew I would get it from you.
I do understand that things like politics and pricing are part of the deal with a big organization like the LAPD. I also know that your guys do a lot more with their guns than the rest of us. Kind of like asking a tow truck driver what brand of truck he thinks is most reliable.
                            Thanks again.

I actually prefer to carry a .40 caliber, but I wouldn't feel under gunned with Federal HST in 9mm. For 9mm we use Winchester, but do issue Federal rounds for other applications.

Don't forget with the XD9, the grip safety locks the slide as well so you can't do one handed reloading drills without figuring how to depress that safety.
