legalization failed due to the anti-liberty voters as well as the drug dealer vote(oh and all the other pot heads were stuck to their couch and didn't vote at all). there was a huge movement by "pothead dealers" to not legalize it. Why? Because the dealers would have to start a real business....you know pay taxes and follow the rules(not selling to minors, etc.) It was also rumored that prices would plummet causing profit margins to shrink.

I think the reason the state cannot collect taxes on it currently is because it is illegal federally.

The initiative's support took a dive as soon as U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder declared he would "vigorously enforce" federal marijuana laws in California. He said any recreational pot business that paid its taxes would be confessing to a crime.

Evidently you did not read all the information in my post This was near the bottom.

"The THC in cannabis has been shown to have a short term bronchodilator effect. This has lead to suggestions that THC may have therapeutic benefits in asthma. However, the noxious gases, chronic airway irritation or malignancy after long term use associated with smoking would seem likely to negate these benefits."

So inhaling noxious smoke is a good way to treat asthma?

So maybe as I said before the THC should be prescribed in pill form, and at a dosage level where the effects are therapeutic and not hallucinogenic.

I think its a combo of both, when i lived near a Marine Base. I was walking down the street to get a bite to eat. I saw some guy stumbling around falling over, so i offer him help. Turns out the guy was a Combat Vet from Afghanistan on leave. I had to help him on his feet b/c he could barley see straight... He was self-medicating himself with alcohol to point where he was unable to control himself. How sad that guy reduces himself to the point of a infant, and its encourage socially by his friends and society. I don't think Pot will ever have the same effects....

Because when you burn marijuana like tobacco or any other substance for that matter, the smoke which is generated is full of harmful chemicals.

Do as you wish, but in 25 years it will be interesting to see how many regular pot smokers will have the same medical issues as long time tobacco users.

Smoking anything is unhealthful and if done long term WILL have adverse effects on your body.

              short story

local LEO arrives at a call. 2 wma's standing around in the street appear to be intoxicated. officer makes contact and s1 balls his fist while s2 complies. s1 is tazed and sprayed. upon arrival to the jail (booked on 647f/148) s1 begins to fight with CO staff. were talking kicking, spitting and yelling. is carried into cell for pat down. CO staff fing 3/4 full one gallon bag of MJ,357$ small bills and to top it all off one of the CO staff tore his rotator cuff. all charges filed and guess what,DA drops MJ charges and dismisses the injury charge.
s1 had 4 prior arrests for MJ and had similar results.

                Hey Lrchops,

Weed isn't legal in amsterdam. It is, however, tolerated. That is why you are able to walk into a coffee shop and buy and smoke marijuana. Holland cannot technically "legalize" marijuana because of various world treaties. The drug brings in so much money to the Dutch economy that it is something that the state and local police do not criminalize. Work on some of your facts or ask a buddy for some help before you keep throwing out inaccurate information. I'd love to see data on this statement as well: "Most big city home invasions and drug related shooting are over marijuana"

I couldn't read the whole thread but this is one of the funniest things I've seen in a while. Booze is the biggest cause of drunk driving? Why not blame the cars or wives who'll kick your *** if you don't get home? That's an idiotic statement like blaming guns for shootings.

I've lived several different places around southern and central California mostly college towns and the Orange County/LA area. The way I see it Marijuana is a huge problem. Everywhere you go you can smell it on people, the grocery clerk too stoned to bag your stuff, the peeing on your trashcan because the thought it would be funny, or the guy stumbling over your feet at the doctor's office asking the receptionist "Do you guys give weed cards?". I'm sick and tired of being around it and having it affect me even when I've chosen to keep it out of my life.

The last town I lived in was a great place, a quiet little town about 8 miles from my school. My girlfriend grew up there and the crime rate was extremely low. Their back door hadn't locked for 8 years until I fixed it but they were never concerned. I looked up the crime stats for the last decade and from what I could see there have been 7 homicides in the last five years there. All seven have taken place in the last 5 years and six of the seven were drug related, either drug deals gone bad or more commonly home invasion drug robberies. In the two years I lived there there were four shootings, two resulting in death, both home invasions over Marijuana. Its not the harmless drug that people claim, and that's completely ignoring the fact that its worse for you than cigarettes.

The only thing I really disagree with the OP on is disqualifying people from LEO careers over mistakes they made. I have two very good friends who got into drugs in high school and nearly flushed their lives away. They cleaned up several years ago. One joined the Marines and want's to be a LEO when he leaves and the other is doing POST in Kentucky. They both turned into extremely productive adults who are as anti drug as you can get.

I must agree with the OP though on the crime rate increase. Our home invasion robberies went through the roof last year and 99% were MMJ related. Even if it was legalized I don't think it would go down either. Its much easier to just let someone else spend the time needed for high quality MJ and then steal it.
There are a lot of good points brought up in this thread. Even if it was legal you would still have the same crime problems. Users would say, the government has no right to tax this because its natural, taxes are too high, etc. Pot would continue to be smuggled, grown illegally, and stolen.

for personal gain(certainly), but for profit.....i highly doubt it.

people smuggle booze and cigarettes across the border still(to keep from paying taxes), people also grow/cook up their own tobacco and alcohol. and these people are robbed from time to time, but drug cartels wouldn't be able to compete with a free market.
