Thank you this thread is very helpful. I received zero response e-mailing the general DOJ e-mail regarding 80% serial numbers.

Anyone know of an engraver in Orange County?

On the BOF 1008, For the Model do we put AR? Type is pistol correct? For the make we just put our first and last names correct? What do we put for the barrel length if we haven't gotten it yet? Can we just put 8"?

Sorry, I am new to all this. Any help would be divine. Thanks!

Can we just email the .pdf directly to dojserialnumber@doj.ca.gov?
I did both and they replied to my email.

          @caliguy93,

Did you voluntarily register any of the 80% guns using the "Firearm Ownership Report" on CFARS before registering them as BBAW? Or did you go straight to registering them with the state as BBAWs? Were all six of you BBAWs long guns or did you register any pistols, too? I'm trying my best to navigate how I should register my own 80% AR pistols as BBAWs.

          Many thanks,

          -Frost

Lowers that have already been engraved with a unique serial and then cerakoted now need a second DOJ serial#.

Following the law since day one and they just keep changing laws.

Mine are all marked per Federal requirements and are featureless. From that standpoint I technically don't need a CA#. But......should I get the numbers anyway and just not use them until some future date. Everyone should apply and get a block of 10 numbers to have for future use.

Thanks so much buddy. I already emailed my application yesterday and (before I got this response) had put "pistol" as the "type" and 8" as the barrel. (UH-OH I want to make a single shot AR pistol which isn't illegal) well i haven't even gotten the barrel yet but this is what I want to ultimately configure it in...hope I don't get in trouble? I guess I'll have to wait to see when or if they respond.

They will probably just assume it is for a firearm you already manufactured.

What did you put for date of manufacture? If it is clear enough you may have no issue.

They responded to me with this:

That's weird since I sent them an application yesterday. I put the date of manufacture as last month; however, it's still an 80% receiver. I haven't drilled it yet. I just wanted a serial number. This is pretty confusing because it doesn't really explain what they want to know.

Should I send them a new application with "N/A" under the date of manufacture?

It sounds like they have acknowledged this is for a new build and are telling you that this is not the correct form. I do not think they have a process in place yet for requesting a serial for future builds. I had too thought that BOF 1008 was what we should use going forward.

Yeah I'm super confused as well. Am I supposed to have milled it first and that would be the date manufactured? That seems a bit odd to me. Should I just tell them I made a mistake and send them a new application?
