I have tried to browse and read about if I have a featureless AR (no flash hider, no bullet button and pinned stock) and it is an 80% gun. I did have my custom serial # with the other required lines engraved. Do I have to request a DOJ serial #, as long as the gun is featureless? Have been told no, but, ya know in Calif. the subject GUNS, just freaking unknown path. Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

DOj Unique serial number application - Serial numbers received

Tuna - a serial is needed from the state for one of two things. 1. an 80% that you want to register as an AW. 2. an 80% that is not registered with the state with your number by July 1 (lots of threads on this topic, so don't need to argue it here, but this is one conclusion). So if you are keeping featureless, no don't apply for a number, but do submit a volreg.Comment

Volreg = Voluntary Registration
Choice:
1. Home built 80% that has a serial number that you've already engraved, OR
2. Factory receiver that was purchased prior to Long Gun or Hand Gun registration and you're volunteering to register said Long Gun or Hand Gun (don't really know why you would but we all do crazy things)
How to do it?
What does it do?
Puts your firearms which were not previous registered, into the CADOJ system

I really do like the idea that I can keep my personalized serial # and not have to request a DOJ one. Though, seems prudent to go the volreg just to keep a hassle down if I get stopped and they look at it, will keep a copy of the volreg paperwork in the gun case. Have seen strange things here in San Diego, and do not need any hassles.Comment

I just got the email from DOJ with their issued serial numbers. Like many others, I also had them engraved months ago with my personal serial numbers.
So for those that are in the same boat, how have you had them engraved? Did you engrave something extra to differentiate this new serial number from the one that's already there?
I'm thinking of engraving it something like this:
"CAL DOJ S/N: FMBUSXXXX"
or
"CAL S/N: FMBUSXXXX"
Or do you think it's enough just to put the new serial number by itself?
"FMBUSXXXX"Comment

Cite to law that states that custom serials are okay?
I've seen in lots of places advice that it's okay to have a custom serial for a lower as long as it's manufactured before July 2018. However, the law, as I've read it, seems to contradict this. Apparently after July 2019 if you have a firearm that does not have a CA DOJ assigned serial, you must apply for it and engrave the device:
AB857:
SEC. 4. Chapter 3 (commencing with Section 29180) is added to Division 7 of Title 4 of Part 6 of the Penal Code, to read:
CHAPTER 3. Assembly of Firearms
29180.
(c) By January 1, 2019, any person who, as of July 1, 2018, owns a firearm that does not bear a serial number assigned to it pursuant to either Section 23910 or pursuant to Chapter 44 (commencing with Section 921) of Part 1 of Title 18 of the United States Code and the regulations issued pursuant thereto, shall do all of the following:
(1) Apply to the Department of Justice for a unique serial number or other mark of identification pursuant to Section 29182.Comment

Do you want to rephrase your question? Someone might think you are advocating doing something illegal. Is there a way for the DOJ to check authenticy of when the gun was actually manufactured? I do not plan on doing nor do i advise doing but could one not just mill a 80% and simply enter 2014 for a pistol build or 2016 for a rifle build? And apply for serial number and register BBAW?

working on filling out my forms now, but have a couple questions:
1) for MODEL, do we put AR or is it a model that we designate since we're manufacturing the rifle?
2) for caliber can we put MULTI?
3) Do we need an HSC/FSC to request a serial number?
I've already had my lowers engraved and already have a model, s/n, and caliber as MULTI on the lower so will it be an issue if I need to put AR as the model/223 as caliber when I have a different model listed on the lower?

So if a 80% lower was previously engraved with a personalized serial (assuming it doesnt start with FMBUS), does DOJ need to assign a new serial still? Or will they register the custom personalized serial already engraved? Or worse case, will there be two engravings- the outdated personalized serial?Comment
