DOj Unique serial number application - Serial numbers received

Hey all, I’d just like to post this for informational purposes. For the assault weapon registration, 80% made firearms need a unique serial number from the DOJ engraved.

I submitted request for 6 firearms, 2 of which has been vol reg’d and the other 4 were engraved per ATF spec.

I mailed out the form but I also submitted scanned copies via email to DOJSerialNumber@doj.ca.gov

I have received a response this morning via replied email.

    Here is what it says:

This email acknowledges that the California Department of Justice (the Department), Bureau of Firearms (the Bureau) has approved your New Serial Number Application. A unique serial number for each firearm listed on your application is noted below:

Unfortunately, pursuant to California Code of Regulations, title 11, section 5474.2, we are unable to use a customized serial number that may have been engraved on your firearm. The serial number must be one that is assigned by the Department of Justice. It is not required to remove the customized serial number that you have engraved on your firearm nor is it required to label each engraved serial number.

Upon receipt of this serial number(s), you may contact a Federal Firearms Licensed Manufacturer (type 07) to have your Department issued serial number applied in a manner consistent with the requirements outlined in the California Code of Regulations, title 11, section 5474.2.

A Federal Firearms Licensee is under no obligation to perform this work. A person that has manufactured their own firearm may also use non licensed parties to apply the serial number and other required markings, however, the owner of the weapon must not leave the firearm unattended with an unlicensed party because of firearm transfer and/or lending laws.

For assault weapons registration pursuant to Penal Code section 30900(b), proof of the serial number being applied to the firearm shall be provided to the Department in the form of digital photographs of the newly serialized firearms. Photos are to be submitted online using the Department’s California Firearms Application Reporting System (“CFARS”) at the time of registration, pursuant to California Penal Code section 30900(b)(1) and California Code of Regulations, title 11, section 5474(c).

Please note that receiving and applying a serial number(s) does NOT register your firearms as an assault weapon and you will still need to complete that process through the Department’s California Firearms Application Reporting System (CFARS). In accordance with Penal Code section 30900(b)(1), if you plan to register an assault weapon that does not have a fixed magazine (bullet button), you must do so by Saturday, June 30th 2018.

When registering your self-built firearm, enter the DOJ assigned serial number in the “serial number” field. If you have a self-created and/or previously assigned serial number, enter it in the “other number field.” For “Make,” select “U S” from the dropdown menu; then, in the comments section, enter the “Make” approved in this application (i.e. your FIRST & LAST NAME).

If you have any questions, contact the Bureau of Firearms at dojserialnumber@doj.ca.gov.

Does Federal Law allow two serial numbers?
"The California matrix of gun control laws is among the harshest in the nation and are filled with criminal law traps for people of common intelligence who desire to obey the law." - U.S. District Judge Roger T. Benitez

How long ago did you submit BOF 1008? I inquired to the DOJ via email and got a response back in hours, but after sending them the form via email I have heard nothing, not even recognition of receipt.

I submitted a BOF 1008 on October 30, received a rejection a couple days ago.

I listed weapon "type" as semi auto, and apparently they want it to be pistol/rifle/shotgun.

Were you trying to obtain serials for BBAW's? or Featureless/Maglocked rifles?

How many digits were the numbers issued?

BTW, a friend of mine got a rejection for his. He did not fill out the model field, apparently you must make up a model name.

All 6 of my DOj issued serial numbers started as “FMBUS####” with the # being sequential numbers.

I unfortunately have to go back to my engraver and pay them once again to engrave one line on 6 firearms

I just read the bof 1008 form and it ask for barrel length, what if your just registering a lower that hasn’t been built yet .
Old problems are like dry poop, if you let the dry poop sit it doesn't smell but the minute you decide to stir the poop with a stick, the smell comes back. Moral of the story, Don't bring up old problems!

I sent in the paperwork snail mail and received serial numbers this week. It took about 8 weeks.

I don't need them since I'm moving, but either way it was less than 60 days.

                            Hi guys,

I also need help. I haven't built it yet just want to make sure I get a serial number for an 80% lower.

On the BOF 1008, For the Model do we put AR? Type is pistol correct? For the make we just put our first and last names correct? What do we put for the barrel length if we haven't gotten it yet? Can we just put 8"?

Sorry, I am new to all this. Any help would be divine. Thanks!

Can we just email the .pdf directly to dojserialnumber@doj.ca.gov?
