The law currently does not require you or them to have a DOj issued serial number for your firearms until 2018.
However, the DOj took it upon themselves to include it as a requirement in their assault weapon regulations.
Thus, they are not accepting serial number requests for non assault weapon registration firearms until 2018.Comment

This morning I resubmitted my BOF1008 staying I had not received confirmation they got it, let alone hear anything for 2 weeks. After a couple hours I received confirmation of receipt, then several hours later a follow-up email with a serial number.

Is this the DOJ indirectly answering whether 80% featureless rifles will ever require a DOJ-issued s/n? Granted, it does say "currently...," it just seems odd they wouldn't be handing out serials for 80% featureless if requested.Last edited by Dale's Dead Bug; 12-12-2017, 9:39 AM.Comment

Ive been following this thread and others about ar pistols; Is their an online form on CFARS to request the DOJ serial number or is mailing it the only way like you did?
I tried to back track to find that answer.Comment

Email to dojserialnumber@doj.ca.gov
As noted previously in the thread this is only for 80% receivers that were legally manufactured in the past into bullet button assault weapons and will be registered as assault weapons (eg bullet button AR rifles made before 2017 when manufacturing a bullet button AR was legal, or bullet button AR pistols made before 2015 when manufacturing a single shot pistol, and subsequently converting it to a bullet button semi auto was legal if said AR pistol had bullet button).
So when you fill out a BOF 1008 make sure you’re not incriminating yourself with manufactured date, ie don’t submit at all and immediately put any firearm not compliant with state laws into CA legal configuration. You sign this form under penalty of perjury. Now you know what not to do.
There’s no form or process yet to get DOJ serials for future builds, or existing 80% builds that won’t be registered as bullet button assault weapons, eg featureless 80% based ARs. That is because none of that stuff is required until next year so come back in 3-6 months. For existing 80% based You can research VolReg which might (will probably) exempt you having to follow whatever process they do come up with for these scenarios.-------------------------Comment
