I think I've found my favorite method for a nice blued finish. I've tried hot and cold blues and they never impressed me. They smell like cat piss and sometimes had an uneven finish or orange tint to it. The rust blue method is very simple but takes a LONGGG time.
I started out by blasting my m70 receiver. Then I rubbed it all with some fine steel wool.

Next I washed it with dish soap to degrease it and then blasted with air compressor to dry it. After degrease I put it on a coat hanger becuase it's important not to touch it. Next I applied a thin almost dry coat of brownells rust blue over the whole thing with Q tip making sure I do not recoat and area I have already covered. I love how little of the solution actually gets used, it seems like you could finish a million parts with 1 bottle. After I applied a coat I hang a let rust. This pic was taken a couple hours after and the rust is starting to form.

The next morning I put my rusted *** receiver in a pan and boil it for 30 minutes. The rust will boil off leaving a dusty black powder on your parts. After boiling take a carding bush and brush the reciever to reveal a nice blued finish. The more rustings the darker it gets.

Here is how things look after 3 days, 3 rustings, and 3 boils. Pretty dark and nearly identical to the factory blued top cover in the picture

There are some light spots but the instructions say this is normal and they will disappear after a few more rustings.. I'd say 2 or 3 more rustings and I'll be finished.

Very VERY happy with it.
