My g/f gave me a cool book (that Mr. Bigbronco mentioned one day when I was kicking it at his place...) called Pet Loads by Ken Waters. The book is horrible for grouping. There is no real index and no completely accurate table of contents and for the most part, the book looks like it is a collection of magazine articles, BUT there is some method to the madness and I wonder what he has listed for 8x57... the paper is rice paper thin, about as many pages as a bible so it may take a bit to get back with what I find...

Newer drives have cruddy magnets compared to the mighty magnets of days of yor. Anyways these drives needed to die. Their errors caused me 3 days in computer hell. Their destruction was cathartic.

As for the 8x57IS, it is tabled for now with the sierra pro-hunter loads showing that consistency is found inside the "standard load" bracket for H4895. Outside you get wild velocity swings which is a clear indication of inconsistent flame-front in the cartridge which is actually what you would expect from an low case fill level.

Well, according to what I have in front of me, I see data for an 8x57 JS. I was hoping that that was the same thing.

BUT, it looks like he did not shoot any H4895, but IMR-4895. Are those the same? I thought they were not.

Apparently the best accuracy found with cast loads was with 163gr Ohaus #8170R and it was using 24gr of IMR-4198, Using IMR-4895 though 29-31gr produced B rated accuracy... Just from what I am looking at. Heavier pills need less powder so I can see dropping it down a bit, but I am talking out of my field here.

Of course it also goes on to note that using 4064 powder at around the 45-48 gr charge will produce psis of around 50k, which should not be shot out of those rifles. That was also with heavier bullets, 150gr and 175gr spitzer (j-worded I think).

Anyways... Too bad he never gathered any PC data... He would have really been ahead of the times... :\

IMR 4895 is a "cousin". They are different powders but very close.

50K PSI is fine in large ring mausers in good shape, the action has been tested to hold till 100kPSI some people rebarrel the large rings into 300 win mag.

I got mine out of this massive 3 ring data book, about 1000 pages thick. Just a photocopy because I didn't feel like dropping the $60 odd on this massive compendium.

overall on this list, best performer was
BL-C(2) with a max 53.5 2818 at only 46700 CUP

IMR 4064 is considerably bulkier than 4895 and a 48gr max charge in IMR4064 is compressed and does not produce top end velocity and even more does it's poorer results at just a hair under 50K CUP.

yeah i saw that thread. i'll check back on it but i seem to recall "throat erosion" whether from fire or friction it bears watching.

latest on the pc .357: they bulge the case and won't drop into the cylinder. i resized a bunch and that will work fine. so i have the added work of resizing but can potentially forego any concern over alloying lead.

Did my first loads of 357 SIG yesterday, tested a few today. Good cycle and function but I need to get another lee mold, the 124TC as the RN I currently have require pretty deep seating.

As it stands the current PowderCoated 357SIG load is:
5.8gr Red Dot
124grain Powder Coated Lead Rn
new starline brass
1.142 COL

No chrono data but discounting fliers that were my fault. 1.5" grouping. Not bad.

BTW 357SIG is a HOOT to shoot. Really fun cartridge. Reinforced my love for bottleneck pistol cartridges. I imagine that making a wild-cat 357SIG with a longer COL, like 1.3 would result in amazing performance potential due to the powder volume it could accept without going over the 38K PSI limit.
