Loaded the next string of Rifle Test Series. Out of powder but I was able to complete the 35.x load series (35.0-35.8 in .2 increments). I will post data once they are run past the chrono. Unfortunately, I am now completely out of H4895 and until I can score some more this will be the last rifle test series for 8x57IS from me. I should have enough pistol powder to continue work for a little while longer.

I think that if you mix HBN powder into your PC that it turns it to ****.

Some 9mm that I did that to did not cover very well. Not like other bullets anyways. HBN needs to stay in wet component mixing only as far as I am concerned. I will repeat the process with some blue PC and see if it can get the same results.

Yeah, so slick that it keeps the powder from adhering possibly. BUT, maybe I need to MIX it up before dropping bullets in. I got 500 .45 acp on the way, I will go for blue with them and see if I can make things work.

first run

i got to powder coating today, i'll try to get some tech. help to post pictures. my objective was to mask off the nose of the bullet using the jig and not have to change to a curing jig (handling) or have a buildup of pc at the "edge".
i saw that in an earlier post. the ridge of pc was due to settling on the plate and was told the rim of a gas check would form a ridge also.
how i built my jig was to use spent .38 spl cases, deprime them then i drilled out the primer pocket and ran them through a seating die. (this belled the case mouth "in" to form a smaller dia.) then i made a tray that fit my toaster oven, drilled a grid of 1" spaced pilot holes at each point and screwed the cases to the pan from behind giving me 35 "stand tubes" to nest my bullets in with no "shelf" for pc to settle on and form a ridge.
i'm using harbor freight kit and hf flat black. i'm on a bit of a learning curve about how to lay down a thick enough coat but the edges are clean and the jig is very workable.

stonefly-2 please report your barrel condition over time with the HF Flat Black. There is someone, and it appears no one else, reporting barrel wear with the flat black.

In a little bit I will be posting the next testing strings. Got back from the range today with a whole lot of testing done.

Conclusions: Sealed. Wildly inconsistent. It is likely that these reduced H4895 charges simply will not be consistent despite accurate weight of charge. This does appear as a pattern.

Conclusions: Still swinging wide, a little closer but nothing to write home about. Sealed chamber properly as well, but since 35 grains did we would expect the same behavior here.

Conclusions: Excepting the deviant charge.. we are pulling inward on the deviation. Brass is still ok, no pushed out primers, no flattened primers, no signs of pressure spikes.

Conclusions:No dice, I do not believe that in this large cartridge case that reduced loads are consistent at ALL.

Conclusions: I always run a "control" string of rounds if I can to show that on the same day with same gun and same temperature and shot interval that the data is consistent. In this case I used 5 of my Sierra Pro Hunter loads. As you can clearly see in the proper charge range of this rifle that the std dev pulls in nice and tight. The light charges are wild, variable, and likely extremely sensitive to position and temp. This being the end of my bottle of 4895 and thus for the time being the end of my rifle tests I can conclude that even though H4895 lists as acceptable to reduce to a 60% charge, that doing so in a large cased cartridge like the 8x57 will result in inconsistent burn and thus accuracy will suffer. What this means is the battle between I4895 and H4895 in large cartridge firearms is a dead heat as the H's advantage was the ability to safely down-load them. Being able to download them and actually getting good results on the reduced charges are two separate things. Once I get more 4895 in I will migrate into the jacketed listed charge range and work from there with the continued Powder Coated rifle bullet testing.

Conclusions: Carbine Fun. 4.4 grains ran great. Had some data errors reduce total sampling to 13 from 20.. ugh. Sometimes the chrono is a bit of a pain. Accurate at distance of 100 yards.

Conclusions:heh, not as consistent as my loads! Cycled fine and shot fine to 100 yards.

Carbine Overall Conclusions:
The JR Carbine 16" barrel took the 9mm PC load of 4.4g of red dot from an average of 1074 in the glock to 1311 in the carbine for a 237 FPS Average GAIN!.. Wow. That was a bit more than expected, however I would need a 6" and a 10" barrel to confirm that 16" was needed for that 237 FPS gain.

I had some M-52 Pistol loads but they fell out of their container during transport and thus.. got mixed....

No data..ARGH! On the bright side they did put holes with soft lead right through a hard-drive! Now that is some power.
