Thanks for the input and interest. I figured this project might be easier than building a bolt action 25 ACP

"Reloading" 22LR

In the old days when shooting galleries at fairs actually still used 22's it was common to reload 22's. They would even recharge the primers and while you would occasionally get a dud when the old firing pin strike would line up but that didn't matter much at a shooting gallery.sigpic50BMGBOB aka 50BMGLAZARUS aka 50BMGZOMBIEBOB aka the UN- DEAD!Comment

I have seen the dies but never really gave it any thought. I am under the assumption that reloading a .22lr is nearly lost now a days. I have never seen any primer gel available for reloading .22lr but I do empty them out for lead and powder and save them. I have a small bottle of them actually. I was planning on "loading" them one day when I figured a way to put some decent powder inside them and give them a roll crimp. I am fairly certain that they are roll crimped.Did you know that normally it is the highly experienced and advanced reloader who handloads .22lr? Or, do you think nobody handloads .22lr? If you think that, please explain why CH4D has .22lr dies, shell plates and even trim dies for .22lr.
Stilly,
You are aware that .22lr can be handloaded, aren't you?
I laughed mainly though because that is a LOT of trouble to go to to make your own 22 short CB loads when there are boxes of good stuff all over.
CCI CB= too loud (cept their LR CB is very nice and quiet)
Remington CBEE = very inconsistent
Winchester XX= Right on the money with slight inconsistency
Colibre hummingbirds = NICE.Last edited by stilly; 07-07-2013, 2:35 AM.7 Billion people on the planet. They aint ALL gonna astronauts. Some will get hit by trains...

I know you can load them but why the heck would you want to try. The costs would be higher than the return. There is ammo to buy that will do the same.
Seems like someone has too much free time to waste to me.
As far as being new to reloading I have often heard this question from people who are new to reloading or do not load.
With that said if the OP want to do it fine go for it. It is his time and money.A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

One of the reasons rimfires are the hardest firearms to shoot for precision is that normally one is stuck with factory ammo. Being able to taylor ammo to a specific gun is far from a waste of time or money if one is trying to get the maximum precision from their firearm. In other words, the return can be worth far more than money can buy. But, if you are only reloading crap ammo to save a buck over factory crap ammo, you are correct. It wouldn't be worth it.I know you can load them but why the heck would you want to try. The costs would be higher than the return. There is ammo to buy that will do the same.

I remember a thread or an article about reloading spent 22 rim. They were doing it in ii think in the Soviet or Middle east part of the world. It can be done only the area of a previous primer strike was the no fire area. Google Fu could be handy here.In the old days when shooting galleries at fairs actually still used 22's it was common to reload 22's. 22rimed brass
I bought a bunch off e-bay years ago, and found them again in the pile that is my garage just a couple of days ago.Years ago there was a listing on ebay for new primed .22lr brass at $20/500 (bulk loaded ammo was about $10/500 at Walmart). I'm still kicking myself for not buying 5000 pieces. I just didn't want to deal with getting a custom shell holder, custom dies and a custom mold back then. However, obviously there are a few advanced handloaders who have.
They seem to be 22mag cases but I guess could be cut down, OP let me know if you are interested in some.Comment

Remember 22 rimfire has a heeled bullet , same diameter as center fire except for the heel part.
But you could use a cast 22 CF that needed a GC without the GC.Bweise says "I have to say the situation was not at all helped by 22 yr old former Airsoft douches who kept touting here, "But possession is not illegal!" "

There are certain things that do not need to be on youtube. When you are advanced enough to reload rimfire or load duplex rounds, you'll know where to look for guidance. Until then, there is no reason to make a video that some moron will try to follow and loose a finger, eye or worse doing so.NRA Certified Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun and Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor

Answer: Because on Calguns.net, answering questions with cogent, relative, accurate, factual replies (like most of CSACannoneer's) is secondary to wisecracks, insults and utter bullsheet from ignorant fools who don't let the fact that they have N. F. idea what they're talking about limit their electronic emissions. That being said, I am fascinated to learn that 22lr reloading exists! Next on the agenda is homemade mercury fulminate 22lr primer paste!

nitrogen dioxide is not benign stuff. Mercury is the least of your worries when trying to synthesize mercury fulminate. I doubt any reasonable person would attempt to make this without a serious wet chemistry background but just in case anyone sees this thread:
If you do not have a significant background in organic chemistry, IN THE LAB, do not f*ing touch this stuff. It will kill you and anyone near you in a painful way.weg: That device is obsolete now. They replaced it with wizards.
frank: Wait a minute. There are more than one wizard? Is [are?] the wizard calibrated?Comment

All interesting stuff. Would it be as "simple" as mixing up some mercury fulminate and dropping it in the bottom of a spent rimfire case to reprime it?
Funny, I've already had friends tell me my reloading bench with balance scale looks a little "Breaking Bad". All I need is a chemistry set.
I've also wondered about making mercury fulminate for DIY percussion caps for cap and ball revolvers. I'm no prepper, but that would be the ultimate sustainable firearm type if commercial powder primers brass and bullets disappear.Comment
