Well this guy did exactly what I proposed in the first place. My curiosity is somewhat satisfied, knowing it's at least feasible:

I'll have to also try drilling out a .223 case and fitting a 209 primer in the bottom. No need to buy the convert-a-pel when I can easily make it for free.

The folks who do the funky .12 and .14 caliber stuff may be a useful resource. Many of them neck down .22lr and .22 mag.

How about this?
1) Cast or obtain a suitable .22 projectile.
2) Manually insert in chamber/cylinder.
3) Follow the bullet with a .22 power load (blanks) from hardware store.

For lower velocity loads, you can unfold the crimp in the power load and remove some powder.

I actually did this yesterday. The nail gun 22 short blanks have power levels 1 to 5. I picked up a box of 2s and 3s. I chambered a 22 air rifle pellet with a 2 power blank and fired. It was really loud. Probably about like a subsonic 22lr.

I have not tried to unfold the crimp.

The blanks were only $6/100pc, less than I expected anyway.

I also made a kinetic bullet puller and pulled some bullets. The lead bullets were in pretty good shape and I could reseat them easy enough. I didn't flare the mouth or crimp, and I could start the bullet by hand. Finished seating on my press between two flat surfaces.

I made one round with 1/5 it's original powder charge and was silent until I heard the bullet hit the target.

Another load was 0.3 grains of e3 which was as loud as a 22 cb long.

If you are looking for quiet 22RF then just use a long(29") barrel and subsonic ammo.

All interesting stuff. Would it be as "simple" as mixing up some mercury fulminate and dropping it in the bottom of a spent rimfire case to reprime it?

Funny, I've already had friends tell me my reloading bench with balance scale looks a little "Breaking Bad". All I need is a chemistry set.

I've also wondered about making mercury fulminate for DIY percussion caps for cap and ball revolvers. I'm no prepper, but that would be the ultimate sustainable firearm type if commercial powder primers brass and bullets disappear.
