"Reloading" 22LR

I have been researching methods to modify loaded 22lr or load custom 22lr from empty primed cases but need some advice to get going. I have not found empty primed cases available to purchase so I'm focusing on modifying factory ammo.

My goal is to make my own quiet low velocity rounds like super colibris or CCI quiet 22. I may also want to try black powder cartridges. If I could find these rounds anywhere (and for a reasonable price) I would just buy them, but I can't. I also already have a brick of blazer that I can play with and I enjoy reloading as much as shooting.

My ideas are to pull the bullet and reduce the existing powder charge or put in a new powder charge of red dot or maybe trail boss if I can find any (really curious about TB in 22). The hard part is salvaging the pulled bullet and reseating. And it may or may not need flaring/ crimping. Does anyone know a good way to do this?

Another option is pulling the bullet with pliers or something and seating a new bullet. Anyone know where I can buy 35-45 grain gas check style cast bullets w/o gas check? I think this will work as a heeled bullet. I don't have my own casting setup yet.

I've been reloading for about 3 years and I have a good understanding of what is involved. I'm new to rimfires if anything.

And yes I know about bb caps, cb caps, shorts, cb longs, etc. I thought I covered that if I could find any of these rarer 22 cartridges I would buy them and try them. I have tried colibri, super colibri, cb short, cb long, and quiet 22 already in my rifle.

I know I'm not the first one to think of this or try it, and I'm wondering if anyone here has any helpful advice.

I believe most of those "silent" type bullets are primer only, no powder. At least the ones I have are.

So all you'd have to do is remove the powder and reseat the bullet.

The simplest way to remove the bullet is to make a simple kinetic bullet puller or modify one to hold 22's.

Seating and crimping would be more difficult. It would be very expensive to get custom dies made. I've never seen any 22LR dies.

Years ago there was a listing on ebay for new primed .22lr brass at $20/500 (bulk loaded ammo was about $10/500 at Walmart). I'm still kicking myself for not buying 5000 pieces. I just didn't want to deal with getting a custom shell holder, custom dies and a custom mold back then. However, obviously there are a few advanced handloaders who have.

Too bad OP is in Sacramento. I could hook him up with some Winchester XX CB shorts... Several years of buying two-three of them at a time at Turners has given me prolly close to about 3500 rounds or more. I do not have THAT many feral cats or squirrels running around, that is why I have a silenced Mrod...

Did you know that normally it is the highly experienced and advanced reloader who handloads .22lr? Or, do you think nobody handloads .22lr? If you think that, please explain why CH4D has .22lr dies, shell plates and even trim dies for .22lr.

I've seen primed cases for sale many times over the years but have no idea what sites I've seen them on.

I've never seen bullets for sale. But they would be easy to cast.

I thought so too, but I measured the OD of a 22lr case and bullet. Both were .224". I don't imagine a .225 boolit is going to cause too much trouble
