Randall's pic is why we need him and I never thought you were picking on the 450b, but better hailing a voice of caution, that we diffidently need.

Your picture, without knowing the facts, looks more like a cook-off or head rupture (I've done both many times, but they were always 5.56 cook-offs or a ruptured case that released the super gases through the carrier and firing pin hole, that did this level destruction), than a broken bolt, because the bolt is still fully engaged. Do you have personal knowledge, as to the details this picture?

Never mind, I saw the link to Kaboom and the postscript should be read by everyone here. But the witness said something that caught my eye, he said the case looked like it was a belted magnum. This is caused by the bolt not being engaged and the case being fired causes the head to swell and look like a belted magnum, because the case is sticking well out of the chamber when it goes off. What this points to, is you'd better follow the loading rules religiously.

Wildcatter's right; semi-autos and full-autos of course, must be fed ammo that's going to feed without issue and why Military chambers and ammo result in a loosely chambered round condition with stronger cases and primers. This leaves room for rounds to chamber fully with the odd kernel of powder, slightly dented case, and dirt or fouling in the chamber. With other types of firearms you get to "feel" the rounds chamber and gain a sense of when things aren't right.

Reloading places the responsibility upon the re-loader to make sure every round will chamber without issue in our semi-autos regardless of caliber. There are so many variables in the reloading process that it's ridiculous to assume every reload is going to chamber regardless of our reloading experience. Performing the "thunk" test in the rifle or use of a case gage for the rifle is essential for reliability and personal safety. Most High-Power shooters wouldn't think of going to a match without checking every round at least twice. 450 Bushmaster chambers aren't sloppy, check your ammo.

Most accidents are the result of us becoming complacent or over confident that everything will be fine. Playing this game with ammo loaded to factory specifications is usually uneventful as most firearms have a decent safety margin built into them; but, when pressures are pushed beyond those margins only you can decide what your comfort level is.

          HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

And what did you do to celebrate today?

Myself and a bunch of my church buddies got together on my brand new 200yd range and had a ball in the snow and cold.

We did do a couple of things you will find interesting. We had a chunk of 1.5" x12"x12" Bullet Proof Glass from a bank. We shot it with my 480 Alaskan, I was expecting a heavy divot, I mean a 325gr Hornady XTP .475cal. out of a three inch revolver. What would you expect? I'm the guy exclaiming about the 1 1/2" glass. The other thing we did to warm yourselves, can be seen in the next video. This isn't exactly 450b stuff, but I hope to open a better dialog about Terminal Ballistics and the 450 and these videos are a good start.

              LOL!!

Randall's one of those teasers that love to call me up in the middle of our winters here and give their tropical weather report. What do you northern guys think, should I send him an airline ticket and have him show us how to get a snow tan? LOL!!!

Tuesday my 450bm drew first and second blood with factory ammo.

Took a 9 point in the morning. He was at 50 yds slightly quartering towards me so i put one just behind the shoulder and it exited 3 in behind his other shoulder. I had to track him for 75 yds but a half blind person could have seen it. It looked like he was dragging a paint roller behind him.

I took a doe that evening. She was quartering hard to me so i had to put it through her shoulder to hit her heart. When she got hit she did a flip! DRT

I love my bushmaster more than anyother gun i own, and i have a lot of guns.

Wow! I'm jealous of your private range Wildcatter,

A private range is one of the last things on my wish-list. We've been looking for a piece of family land (20-200 acres) with a private range in mind. It looks like everyone had a great time, how was the 3" 480 Ruger??

I wonder if you've chambered the 45 professional or 450Bushmaster in other types of rifles. I think a Marlin 35 Remington could easily be re-barreled or re-bored for the 450b.

I wanted to load some 320 grain 450b ammo this week but got sidetracked with a new girl friend our daughter got us last week... introducing Daisy, our new 7 month old Yellow Lab. She's been a lot of work, but she's beautiful and wonderful with our entire family including a 14 year old Rottweiler, Tabby cat and our grandchildren. She's our first lab... what a wonderful breed!

I hope to load some 450b 320 grain loads today with 296 and H110 and get to the range on Sunday afternoon.

                      Have fun,

'Lil Daisy is as sweet as they come. Labs are great. I have a black lab now, years ago I had a yellow.

Yep, Chambered tons of Mini-14&30's to the 45 Pro and some to 450b. Have a friend that wants to convert his AUG., some pistols etc., the list is pretty extensive. I have converted many bolt guns and one of these days I will tell ya all what kind of loads they shoot, but for now I do not want to confuse the issue at hand and I sure don't want Randall too tease me about the tropics in his area, dem-sowthern-califronees guys need a little Al Gore in their weather..wink..

But a 35 Marlin I have not, but it sure interests me greatly. When I get this shop up and running again (I'm in the process of moving my operations), lets definitely talk.

I'll stay on the porch and let the Big Dogs run with the R&D. I'm already very close to where I want to be Thanks to Slash. 45grs. of LIL Gun & 230grn. FMJ ball should put me at 2539fps. Acording to Hornady ballistic calculator. Sighting in at 25yrds. should put me 2.1" high @ 100yrds & 2.3" low @ 200yrds. Bingo! Thats close enough for my needs. With Hornady making the brass available, Remington and other coming into production, the published data should be available soon. Then I'm sure to keep it between the ditches!
Thanks again! To All the reloading Gods out there!

I went back-east* for a match yesterday and it was COLD.
Barely made it into the mid 50's...

In this case, we were in Las Vegas.

Yes, I know the drill of moving operations... we were in the two-way radio business for 35+ years until cell phones and micro electronics put us out of business (unrepairable). I hope you have lots of help moving your equipment. We have a small machine shop out in our workshop building with a 13x24 bench-top lathe, large bench-top mill, and 2 CNC machines.

It took me 1 1/2 years to make this little CNC MiniMill.

I've also made several rifles from Yugo M48A actions and a Bruno 98 action, Re-barreled a Winchester M94 to 375 Winchester (my avatar), and re-chambered 2 barrels for my TC Contender from 357 Maximum to a wildcat I call the 35-55. I'm not a gunsmith or machinist, just a hobby guy that likes machine technology too.

I think I'll start looking for a Marlin 45 Colt barrel to screw onto a 444 Marlin that's gathering dust in the safe.

We went to silhouette matches all over the country for over 20+ years Randall; enjoy them while you can, the better half and I still try to go to a few matches every year to visit with our shooting friends and tell tall tales. Arthritis and a bad back has slowed me down quite a bit and I can't compete worth a dam, but I still enjoy shooting the "boomers" so much we go anyway.

Maybe Thompson Center Arms (now Smith & Wesson) might consider making a barrel in 450 Bushmaster for the Encore??

                              Have fun,

ooh wow! Could it be possible to make some high capacity mags for the 450?
