Great thread! I missed it before.

For those having issues with motion detecting due to leaves, spiders, etc., consider using a PIR motion detector as a trigger instead. I modified a $12 Harbor Freight driveway alert to trigger my driveway camera and it works great. Before that, I had lots of recordings of the trees' shadows moving in gentle breezes. With a PIR sensor, it only records when there is a person, animal, or vehicle out there.

Doesn't look like I ever reported back here, but I got the system I bought from Yugo installed and set up. Only glitch along the way was the programming. Once I knew which numbers to plug in (thanks Yugo), everything worked well. I'm able to view the cameras from any desktop computer or my phone.

I purchased a separate video monitor and after about a week, I realized that I could have used any TV in the house as the monitor (assuming I didn't run into distance issues). Would be pretty cool to be watching TV, hear a knock on the door, switch inputs on the TV and see what's going on.

Image quality is good, but I can see myself looking into upgrades in the future.

I found this DIY wireless solution to work very well for me.

          1) Get a few of these, indoors or outdoors, whichever is appropriate...

          2) Use a "cloud" DVR service. Very configurable and you are not SOL if your DVR is stolen by the thieves, which is likely to happen. It messages you if there is any movement on the cameras or if your cameras go off-line. Yes, there is a small monthly fee, but it's worth it IMO.

          3) If you have an Android phone, get IP Cam Viewer Pro to view any of your cameras live at any time.

My dad owned a surveillance company for a number of years, and is willing to help me do an install, just haven't gotten around to it yet. Plus he has a bunch of cool equipment he's accumulated over the years. Even the deterrence alone is worth having a couple cameras.

I'm in the market as well. I'm ready to go once it gets all planned out.

Any tricks with cameras on a detached garage? I guess I could dig a big trench but I will face some challenges there (distance and some concrete).

I stuck up a camera when we had two drug dealers next door.

The SECOND that camera was put up, EVERYONE knew it was there. People up and down the street were asking my neighbors son where their camera was too and how many I have etc.. . Gang Members, thug wanna b's, dealers, addicts, dumpster diving crack heads.

For a while our condo got a lot of finger pointing and attention.

The 3 GSD's are the other half of the deternce, they wont even let my neighbor who they know inside the house when we arent home. (I ask one of them to put one of my dogs inside the house when he got out by jumping the fence).

I watched him jump the fence on an app for my cellphone.

Cameras, definately suggest people get them. That blinking light does wonders ...

Yugo got me all setup and he and his helper were awesome. Feel so much better knowing what's going on whether I'm home or not, just need to setup the triggers/alerts/etc.

They sell cat 5 that has messenger wire attached to it.. so you would just string up to a couple of hooks on each side.. keeping in mind your height clearance of 14'??

Your local cable guy should be able to give you the hooks you need.. just tell him you need to run a cable from your house to your garage. And you need a couple of P hooks. J- hooks will work too ..

do you have a sub pole in your back yard? you can go to that if it makes any sense.

Curious how the remote viewing works, especially because most internet connections are dynamic and not static.

My guess is just forwarding the ports through the router and then using your home ip to access cameras?

What is most common for these setups? I use onssi and axis camera station at work but we have a real firewall so punching it through for remote access is easy.

I went a cheap route as a starting point, as my son is latch-key now, and we have pricey child care fees for my daughter that tie-up much of our what would be disposable income.

1x Wireless DCS-930L set to drop images via local FTP server on motion detect that then can be dropped/duped on a server on the internet securely, as FTP user/pass are sent plain text

2x Wireless DCS-932L set to drop images via local FTP server on motion detect that then can be dropped/duped on a server on the internet securely, as FTP user/pass are sent plain text

                                1x Motion detect alarm system

Each cost me about $100, and monitoring of the alarm system is monthly.

I always have at least 1 Slackware Linux box on in the home on a UPS.

There are some security holes, but at least I can see if my son is going for one of the no-no rooms, or NOT doing his homework. There is at least SOME security, not to mention I have a plan in place as funds allow to close the security holes.

When I couldn't see my cameras one time, I took an early lunch to make sure all was good even though the alarm didn't go off, and I am not far from work.

Firearms stashed throughout the home, not in one place, none of which can be seen walking around the house searching for them.

DDNS of one flavor, or another due to dynamic addressing of IPs. Mine costs me about $12/year.
