I think I read somewhere (which obviously doesn't mean it has to be true) that even when residents have a surveillance system installed, in most cases the pics/video actually don't result in the perps being caught anyway.

For example, it seems to me like it would be easy for a criminal to claim "it wasn't me, just someone who looks like me." Also, I've rarely seen surveillance pics/video that were clear enough to identify people with very high certainty.

What do you think?

I have cameras outside and inside during the day. If I see someone getting into the house I can either be there in minutes or 911 and have the Cops there. I can follow them with a joystick for as long as they are in sight.

I use no-ip. They provide free program you install on your DVR. You pick a free domain name and their program updates there server with your current IP address.

Lets just say, I'm covered from all angles.

Ip, PoE cameras, some wired, some wireless, in and out. Redundant data storage. A screen shot from my phone of a couple of angles. All adjustable from anywhere my phone had signal.

Buy the best you can afford, make it expandable too.

The problem I have come across is that most consumer grade systems offer NTSC grades camera with pretty poor optics and low grade CMOS sensors. This translates into poor pictures. HD quality cameras bump up the system price significantly.

I have wireless cams set up in my downstairs so I can see all possible points of entry to my house. I hated the lack of knowing what was going on downstairs while upstairs. It is nice to be able to check on the house from anywhere i'm at.

The night vision of the newer cameras is pretty amazing. I figured it would be crappy gimick vision. With the night vision on everything is viewable at night.

In all My years CCTV equipment is not a technology that is purchased from Costco, Staples or some Korean/ Chinese junk.

This is what is call a solid mid grade CCTV system. I have never took the cheap rout. Pay more and get even more, I have this in my house and truly love the Quality and stable functionality. I mean, cameras are good for recording and presenting evidence after the fact, but unless you have a motion sensor that alerts you to movement outside the home, or are coked out watching the monitors 24/7, a dog and motion sensing lights and a 12g is good enough.

Its just another excuse for paranoid people with cash to spend and act cool.

Are you really going to watch your monitor 24/7? besides, if you have neighbors, they can file suit against your for invasion of privacy if they think the cameras are pointed at their house to spy inside...

Unlike the U.S. Constitution, the California Constitution contains an explicit guarantee of privacy in Article I, Section 1 of its “Declaration of Rights.” For this right to be violated, video surveillance must fulfill three criteria: 1) It constitutes an intrusion. 2) It intrudes in a location or context where there is a reasonable expectation of privacy. 3) It outweighs other interests by the gravity of the alleged violation. A good example of a constitutional violation would be if your boss installed a hidden camera inside the toilet stall of a restroom. That would be a location where privacy is assumed and the location could not be justified as a security risk (as opposed to near a cash register).

Blaze: Seems like you know the privacy laws well. But there are ways to prevent invasion of privacy. Putting a camera were it clearly does not belong is wrong!! Cameras installed inside private property are pointed only the direction of coverage needed. There is a clear understanding in the CCTV industry and we follow these rules like Religion. Signs stating "you are being recorded or CCTV on premises eliminates all responsibility and invasion of privacy is VOID on any LEVEL. Now Technology is something that you may need to keep up with or understand better. A good DVR these days made by a Reputable manufacturer, NOT Korean or Chinese CRAP! Will do everything except wash your car. You made a remark about being in front of the monitor or being notified by the system is not good enough.
1. A well made DVR will contact Monitoring Center and send clips of the unlawful entry.
2. Will contact 911 and or local police
3. will contact you and send video of entry
4. will lock and unlock doors over the internet via smart phone or remote access.
5. Turn on your lights at a given time, notify you or spouse of all programmed activity
6. Make continuous sweeps of property indoors and out looking for movement and identifying temperatures to distinguish between animal and human. according to set Perimeters
7. (Remote Access) having total control of your home down to changing DVR setting as you sip a May Tay in Hawaii.
8. Tied into a access control system for more security and property control
9. Turn on your coffee maker
The possibilities are overwhelming to say the least, and we are just talking about residential systems and coverage.

Clever, I am sorry but I have been selling Korean equipment for many years and it is not CRAP. I can not say the same for Chinese.

The sensors are mostly all made by Sony.

So are the imagers, but I think Samsung is making a move. The Korean equipment is Korean, OK. But I will put a mid range Japanese system against it and (all do respect) Leave it in my dust.. Sensors regardless of the manufacturer are for perimeter security even though they can be incorporated into the DVR, BUT NOT NEEDED. The DVR automatically senses motion and calculates according to the perimeters set by OPERATOR.
These days, analog systems have reached the ceiling in technology and performance..IP will set such a high standard that the capabilities are unbelievable.
