Hardly impossible. My 5 minute solution to your issue is described in this professional graphic:

Drill a hole through your wall / stucco / wood / whatever is in the way, and go grab some plastic tubing from homedepot and a pair of corresponding rubber endcaps to prevent moisture from coming in, and pass your wires through that. I did about 6 of these holes through out my outer stucco with no problem. =D

Have you thought about a career in creating technical drawings? And your instructions are already better than any prefab furniture that I've ever bought.

I don't have problems with the idea of fishing wires through walls. I've done a dozen outlets in my house including inside to outside and with conduit, but I literally have no way to get the wires through some parts of the house without those poke holes being visible from inside.

I could possibly run long runs of wire around the house from an attic, but that leaves long areas of exposed cable prime to be cut by a perp. I was ready to run these wires myself, but there's literally no way to get them from any one closet/attic to the four sides of my house. The separate attics don't even get close to meeting and are all on different elevations.

I'm sure a professional could find the route that works, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the wires around without running them along the vaulted ceilings in our entryway/living room.

Hah, I need a house first. Not even going to miss with it while I still live in this apartment.

Wire is cheap, run it in the eaves for now until you can afford to do it the way you want. I can help if you need an extra hand, LMK.

Lots of camera systems these days run on cat5 wire and no longer use the traditional power wire with coax cable. Not saying its not used just lots of the home security stuff is on cat 5. And if its not you can get adapters that switch you from BNC to cat5 cable with 8 pin connector. We do a lot of commercial camera installs usually 100+ camera systems. If you have a guy coming in your house running data cables have him run a few extra for cameras. If you have a single story house you should be ashamed if you do not have a camera system. And in some two story homes they are still possible to install with very little drywall to no drywall damage. Not always it depends on how your house is built.
Even the cheap Qsee type cameras are a lot better and smaller than they used to be.
There are cameras installed in intercom systems where if someone rings the doorbell it takes a pic of their face. There is a ton of stuff out there and it's getting better every day.
As for running wires that's just experience. You can have a pro run the wires for you with no equipment installation.

I think I read somewhere (which obviously doesn't mean it has to be true) that even when residents have a surveillance system installed, in most cases the pics/video actually don't result in the perps being caught anyway.

For example, it seems to me like it would be easy for a criminal to claim "it wasn't me, just someone who looks like me." Also, I've rarely seen surveillance pics/video that were clear enough to identify people with very high certainty.

                    What do you think?

Not unless the dogs are trained in the use of said scatter gun. BTW, who does Tactical Pooch training?

Ask ChrisF, his dog is trained to kill.

True, as illustrated in this case. The guy has a great video of his car being stolen and the perps know exactly where the camera is the entire time. They just don't care and have never been caught.

I live in a rental myself but the question looms , How much are your firearms, personal belongings worth to you? I would say to most of us they mean a lot. I don't see myself running cable here and doing the full 9 but I am going to be looking at least doing something.

You meet the nicest people on this forum. Thanks for the offer, although I'd probably feel like a heel if I took you up on it.

A neighbor is looking into the camera install and has the same house as I do. He's an engineer at Lockheed, so I suspect that together we might be able to figure out exactly where the cables were run IF he gets his install.
