Someone Casing My Pad: THREAD, Got Me Thinking?!?!? (Security Camera Related)

Why the hell do MOST of the people on this website not have security camera's on/around there homes?

Most of you claim to be preppers, security cameras should be pretty high on your list of items to have.

Email/phone notifications when movement happens, pick up your smart phone and you can see your house in real time.

I mean even if you buy the cheap Q-SEE crap or what ever is still better than coming home and your neighbor telling you there was some one in your back yard and no other info and you depend on CG to tell you what we think happened, would it not be better to REALLY know what happened?

    OK RANT over,

Good question Yugo, I think mostly because of laziness or most people not knowing what to buy and how to install it I guess. I'm obviously guilty of this.....

I think those who are truly prepared don't talk about it, while others (seem to be more on here as of late) get their panties wadded about someone carrying in their own home on halloween

You can't fart near my home or office without me knowing about it and recording the entire event. As an added bonus, the IR illuminators clearly indicate that you are being watched. I love it when people look up at the cameras on the second story balcony and give me a nice full face shot. I stream events from my home cameras to my office and vice versa, so if someone breaks in and steals my NAS, they got the wrong one.

Sometimes the biggest obstacle in setting up cameras is the lack of easy access to electric power. Not everyone is comfortable installing new outlets, and running extension cords all over the place is really lame.

Allow me to push you dudes in the right direction. I recently bought one of these:

8 Channel Embedded Linux US811 H.264 Network DVR

                Along with some of these:

Lorex Professional Varifocal Security Camera LDC6081

                This particular harddrive:

Western Digital Caviar Black 1 TB SATA III 7200 RPM 64 MB Cache

And this to power them all, or you can just use a power strip and individual wallwarts:

VideoSecu 18 Output 12 V DC CCTV Distributed Power Supply Box

You might need some of this if you want to get to hard-to-reach places:

VideoSecu 100 Feet Video Power BNC RCA White Cable Wire

Now none of you have any excuse not to have a decent web-accessible security system to record everything around your property.

If you feel the need to go wireless, (remember you still need to run power cables to each device no matter what), then I recommend the following device:

Sharx Security SCNC3605N Wireless b/g/n Weatherproof Outdoor MPEG4 IP Network Camera

It has built in recording and a built in network adapter to be accessed remotely, but for the price of each, you may want to invest in the wired-system above. - Toodaloo

I have 3 set up. One in the living room to watch the dogs, one on the patio in a big obnoxious bubble so that its obvious to watch the patio door, front door, and motorcycle. The 3rd is just a spare and floats around the house to spy on the dogs.

I can watch from my phone and have a spare hidden laptop recording on motion detection.

So are dogs and a 12g not enough anymore? I mean I know more cameras and stuff would be safer but I think I'm pretty well off.

For me it's the problem with running the wires. I have gone into my subattics and there is NO way to run wires to more than a few walls of the house with any location. I suspect that it would take a professional install-which my wife doesn't want to pay for.

Anyone know a good installer- who doesn't charge too much- in the East Bay?

As you said, the biggest issue is having to have a cable of some sort-wired with power over the cable, wired with separate power and video or wireless with power cable.

If your house is set up with strange attics (my house has 4 separate attics, only one being the "main") and no direct connection between any of them, it becomes impossible to set up a system with 2 or 3 separate security systems.

All you need is a 4 conductor cable to each camera. Run your cabeling under the eaves of the house. You dont need a professional, just plan it out.
