I'm a big fan of Linux (Debian), but I have software on Win that doesn't run on Linux (like ProTools). With deep regret, I have to use it.

Years ago I was fooling around a lot with the NetBSD kernel (the TCP/IP stack) and I absolutely love the control you have over your machine using open source software. Having said that, I think Microsoft has learned from their past mistakes and has gotten better. It doesn't mean they are great, or that they won't make any mistakes in the future (from what I hear Win 8 is lousy), but they aren't going anywhere.

That looks random to you? looks like well segmented chunks of information to me.

You haven't tried sorting and re-sizing anything in the metro UI then. It's also not much information displayed considering the size of some of the icons(like the IE icon being 4x the size it needs to be, or the massive "Store" icon) while only being able to show 3 listing in the finance window, a single email subject line... yeah, it's crap.

uuuhhh, thats the desktop, and those are the icons. you tap them and they open up to the actual application. so instead of having a bunch of small icons that tell you nothing, you have these large icons that actual show you relevant information. So at a glance i see my first meeting of the day, my most changed stocks, my most recent email, the latest facebook update, the weather, and a recent tweet. all without clicking on anything. looks bloody fantastic for a slate/tablet/hand-held device. its all customizable, and there are multiple pages.

It's not the desktop... it's the metro UI, for a desktop computer. The desktop is a separate interface(that you can see the oversized button for on the right side), or you can move the mouse cursor to the bottom left and click(which brings up a different set of issues).

Yeah, it would be fine on a phone. Not on a 27" monitor.

I used to triple boot Linux, xp and vista when I was younger but now I just use windows 7. I see no point to do that stuff now. I do want a Mac and yes I've booted osx on my pc but not all of my hardware was compatable. Mostly I want a Mac for final cut pro and reason.

Because you can't control where one object ends up while you're moving another. If you think it's so great, then go use the thing. Once you've used it, you can figure out how to instruct someone to move their cursor to a position in the corner that has no visual indication of being the correct position, without being exactly in the corner, waiting for the pop-up, and then clicking without clicking on the pop-up.

You're either being a worse troll than the86d, or you're ignorantly commenting on something you have no experience with.

Obviously it is since you appear to be clueless when it comes to modern versions of Windows.

I should not have to buy an i7 to run an OS that's system min. req's are:
                          1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor

1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)

16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)

DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

Yeah Min Req, whatever... I am running a quad Athlon 64.
And you don't need anything close to an i7 for it to run fine. What you do need is hardware that is not crap.

I am guessing y'all trolls are PAYING child support? I'm RECEIVING it, as I put my kids 1st over a new cert, and just a bit more salary( oh, and my house is only MY name).
Why are you calling people who tell you are wrong that they are dead-beat parents? That is just uncalled for. BTW, certs are cheap and easy to get if you apply yourself. Many times employers will even pay for them if they believe you will benefit from them. However I doubt your employer will since you are so thick headed.

I think he's just trolling now. Although everyone can agree Windows 8 is not a desktop OS.

For those that want to stick with Microsoft, hey, it's your computer, your choice. I was simply describing *my* choice, and some of the reasons for that choice. If you want to run Mac OS, go for it. If you want to run eComStation or OpenBSD, go for it. My choice simply happens to be GNU/Linux, and mostly Ubuntu. It works for me.

One major reason for that choice is the same reason that I'm pro-gun. GNU/Linux gives me the freedom to do what I want with my computer, instead of what Microsoft and Apple tell me that they *allow* me to do with my computer. To me, this is a pro-liberty position. So I had to learn something about GNU/Linux. So what? At work, I had to (re)learn how to use Microsoft Windows with both Vista and Windows 7 came out.

My desktop will very likely not be "pwn3d" again for a very, very long time. And it now does what I want it to do. I like it. :-)
