No more Microsoft Windows; it's GNU/Linux for me

Look at the capacitors on the motherboard, I bet a few have gone bad. That would explain your performance issues. Those were freebees from work a few years ago... Yep, all I could muster from scrap that would otherwise go unused, or eWasted. I very well couldn't take production hardware home as a tinker-toy (without worry of loosing my job), only obsolete stuff, per a verbal agreement with my director... Win 7 even drags compared to XP even on a Core2 Duo, yet even less on an i7, but no...

So I need to answer your question, like you are a god, an officer, or need to play the daddy role (for lack of playing it IRL)? You DO NOT RATE an answer, since you are just trolling for attention directly to you, and you alone. Lonely much?
You might want to check who wanted the derail, instead of just accepting that "someone had issues with an OS", "and I'm just sick of the crappy software that Microsoft has been putting out for years and years." from the OP . My initial posts were relevant. Merc needed the attention of a 4 year old girl, and unfortunately to my dismay, I obliged. Got pissy, was tired, and the continual train wreck ensued, yet he still keeps egging.
The derail is mostly about Merc wanting to derail the thread for his own entertainment, rather than just accept that people other than him have issues with Windows and why they are looking @ Linux. He wants more than a full page of replies, dedicated to him and his requests.
If someone posts about an issue, and the response is "I don't have that issue..." or something equivalent, the response is useless, especially if SOMEONE is more lonely than others, and keeps needing responses to thread-irrelevance. I am not saying I did not take part, or get stupid here, but Merc needs something better to do, as I am sure all will agree: Merc was really MORE HELPFUL than everyone else in THIS thread.Last edited by the86d; 06-13-2012, 7:24 AM.Comment

So you were wrong, and simply being mis-informed or a liar doesn't matter since you've clearly demonstrated it for us. Go ahead and keep spreading that BS elsewhere. I ask a yes/no question, you call me a troll. I ask again, you go on a childish tirade. You really need to take a good look in the mirror and stop projecting your problems onto others.Comment

It actually reminds me of Windows 1.0. Tiled. *bleh* But I guess styles come and go. Who here remembers the first time bell bottom jeans came around?
So you're arguing about whether or not Windows breaks itself? Why then do calendar gadgets turn themselves orange after a reboot? Or why does Windows update complain that the service is not started when, according to Services.msc, it is?
Or is this a clone of the 9mm vs. .45acp/Ford vs. Chevy/Glock vs. 1911?
As cool as Linux is, I wouldn't be able to run it at home. Not until Adobe gets PS or LightRoom to run native on it. I wouldn't even want to try it with any of the emulators--I need it to work.Comment

Frankly, it's even sillier than the 9mm vs 45/ ford vs chevy/etc. since there are even more technical reasons why one choice would be better than another for some people(ie. You can tow a boat with a ford or a chevy, but this would be like if the chevy could only tow boats and the ford could only tow a trailer with a car on it, and one person is claiming that one of them is better because the other can't be used to drive to the grocery store because they can't start the thing due to the ignition being in a slightly different position). It actually reminds me of Windows 1.0. Emulators... frankly I think a lot of the development has gone the way of the dodo due to people simply running a virtual machine(which may still have some performance issues depending upon the application) since it's not like you really need to emulate hardware these days.Comment

Wow..a couple pages of silly. Maybe I should have said "IBTL!"Frankly, it's even sillier than the 9mm vs 45/ ford vs chevy/etc. since there are even more technical reasons why one choice would be better than another for some people(ie. VM's would be one way to go...I just don't want to deal with the hassle of it at home. I have enough fun with them at work--well LPARs on IBM Power equipment. The last thing I'd need is for a couple of VM's to get into a fight over memory when I try to load up one of my stock photo PSD files into PS. Some are several hundred meg (one's pushing 550MB). And then there's "Honey, the computer is acting up again..."Emulators... frankly I think a lot of the development has gone the way of the dodo due to people simply running a virtual machine(which may still have some performance issues depending upon the application) since it's not like you really need to emulate hardware these days.

As cheap as it is to throw 16GB of ram into a desktop these days, you should be able to run a couple of VMs loading PSD files without issue, other than possible performance problems. However the times I've run into that with VMs using hyper-v or esx, the biggest bottleneck has been HDDs and waiting on disk I/O. However an SSD typically makes up for that. I'm not familiar with LPARs(or any of IBMs recent software for that matter) to be able to point out any difference between it and hyper-v/esx. If that's all you rely on windows for, I'd say it's worth a shot(not that I'd ever suggest going to Fry's, buying an SSD, running your tests to see if it's usable, then returning that SSD to Fry's within their return period for a full refund, and then buying the SSD again elsewhere at a better price...)Comment

I've been running linux now for about 3 years now. I can probably count on one hand the amount of times I've opened the terminal. And all those times were just for fun. Never had a problem, everything worked perfect after the install.
This is where I just jinxed the living hell out of myself.
Switched over because one time during finals I was writing an essay and the updater popped up. Told it that I didn't want to update. 5 seconds later my computer turned off to upgrade. All my work was lost and no recovery to be found. Turned all the updating stuff off, few months later it's finals season again. Was doing some final tables in Excel for chemistry when the computer randomly shut off and started updating. Again, no auto saves or recovery to be found. With an extreme amount of butthurt I wiped Vista off my computer and have looked back many times since.sigpicComment

You know what, when you start working on a document you should save it first thing. This way the word processing software will automatically save what you have once every 5 minutes or so (old copy gets moved to .bak so you can revert). In fact you can configure the auto-save interval in pretty much every word processor. This feature is there to prevent loss of work in the event of power loss.I've been running linux now for about 3 years now. I know this. It actually did the forced updates more than twice, it was just both times I forgot to save were finals weeks. Getting only a few hours of sleep and trying to make the most of random bursts of energy at 2-3am, you tend to miss some steps. You know what, when you start working on a document you should save it first thing. When I switched it was just 100% butthurt on my part, didn't actually think I'd stick with it. But after never running into a problem, I never saw the need to switch back. Especially after professors started using Office 10, and I could read their documents perfectly in LibreOffice, but everyone with Office 7 was left SOL.sigpicComment

Also on top of that is shadow copies if you have an OS with it enabled. You know what, when you start working on a document you should save it first thing.
