No more Microsoft Windows; it's GNU/Linux for me

I'm just sick of the crappy software that Microsoft has been putting out for years and years. No, I won't be going with their Windows 8. I've been using Ubuntu Linux to make my videos (using Kdenlive) and I gotta say, it's been pretty damn good. No operating system will ever be perfect (nope, not even Apple's Mac OS--sorry, Jobsians), but Ubuntu Linux comes closer than others have. Runs on any cheap commodity computer, totally easy to use, way more secure, less buggy, and tons of really good software out there for it (e. g. Kdenlive).

No more Microsoft for me. My Dad's running CentOS Linux and is doing great. Some of my neighbors are now running Ubuntu Linux and are loving it. It's nice to have a computer that actually works...without being "pwn3d". :-)

Any other GNU/Linux users 'round dese here CalGuns parts? (BSD counts, too, BTW)

    Welcome!
I've been a unix/Linux guru since 1984, dumped my iMac and went totally Linux on my home machine back in 2005, have never looked back. Though Canonical has occasionally made me scratch my head with some of the things they have done to the OS lately, I'm sticking with it.

I run Ubuntu on my computer, but since I left the IT industry last year I've barely used a computer.

just depends on your needs, really. Linux works fine for a lot of people.

let me know when you have Skyrim, EVE, and DCS A10-C working and I'll meet you over in Linux land.

I've dabbled with linux off and on for years but finally completely gave up on Windows a few months ago. My work is Mac and I now use Ubuntu at home so I am now WindozeFree!

I like this newer incarnation of Linux well enough I hope to never mess with MS again.

Welcome to Open Source!!! I'm dual booting Windows 7 and Mint (based off Ubuntu). If I didn't game, I'd probably be exclusively Linux right now.

Especially on my home machine, I want stuff to just work, especially my games. Linux just isn't there yet.

                Linux FTW!

Every computer in my home is on Linux except for the most recent machine I bought my GF. There was no way to buy the laptop without the OS, so I'll use it for games.

Welcome to the world of Linux! I've been using Linux for several years now and can't believe how far along it's come. I remember in it's early days, it was a pain to use, but today's flavors are so well put together everything just clicks into place and is easy to install and use. I'm not 100% Windows-less, still have a box for gaming, but that's pretty much it though.

I've tried going full Linux a few times. There is just some things that work better on windows. I'm sticking with it on my netbook though.

I used linux for ~10 years and finally made the switch: back to Windoze! Why?
                        - Everything "just works." Ok, there is the initial tweaking period with a new computer and new install, but after that there's virtually nothing to do.
                        - Peripherals are supported. Even with my Vista64 I got my old printer and scanner to work. Not a prayer of doing so under Linux. Printing in particular was always a PITA under Linux and I was never able to scan anything.
                        - Most of the free SW available on linux is also available on Windoze.
                        - All my legacy SW works on Windoze.
                        - I got a free copy of MS Office 2010 from work.
                        - Software install/uninstalls are easy
                        - Etc.

At work I live within Linux. Only my word processor and email run on Windoze, so it's not as if I've left it behind entirely. But at home I have decided to stop burning time debugging my computer, so Windoze it is.

Android is about the only example of a linux/unix based system that is really plug and play. My phone "just works" and it's easy to install/uninstall SW. Then again, it's a closed HW platform much like a Mac (I've heard Macs also "just work" but I won't touch them with a 10-ft pole after I found out the little open/close widgets on each window are permanently positioned on the LEFT side, LOL.)

I'm reliant on an Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop workflow, so I stick with OS X.

Back when I was still in college, I was heavy Linux, simply because the development environment was cleaner (gcc, gpp), but I've always hated the Linux windowing environment / window managers. I toyed with all of them back in the day, and KDE ended up being the most tolerable to me, which is why I used KDE when I switched from Linux to FreeBSD.

But after 10+ years, gnome, KDE and the like have gotten better. Though OS X gives me a far cleaner/smoother window environment, commercial application support (Adobe), and the *nix development and sysadmin environment I need, which is why I use OS X.

Note: Amazingly enough, Cygwin is fairly decent for Windows and ActivePerl works well, too.

I guess I just got tired of system "pwnage", the forced upgrades, hardware not working on Microsoft Windows (you'd be surprised), and all the other problems with Microsoft. And then there's vendor lock-in. That's also, BTW, what keeps me away from Apple's Mac line.

GNU/Linux, for me, is the system that "just works", doesn't get in my way, and doesn't try to dictate to me what I can and cannot do with my computer. I really like that.
