No more Microsoft Windows; it's GNU/Linux for me

Ok, if you REALLY want to take it to some extreme like that(one hell of a tangent if you ask me), just what do you think the GPL is? It's like communism for software development. For those that want to stick with Microsoft, hey, it's your computer, your choice. I was simply describing *my* choice, and some of the reasons for that choice. If you want to run Mac OS, go for it. If you want to run eComStation or OpenBSD, go for it. My choice simply happens to be GNU/Linux, and mostly Ubuntu. It works for me.
One major reason for that choice is the same reason that I'm pro-gun. GNU/Linux gives me the freedom to do what I want with my computer, instead of what Microsoft and Apple tell me that they *allow* me to do with my computer. To me, this is a pro-liberty position. So I had to learn something about GNU/Linux. So what? At work, I had to (re)learn how to use Microsoft Windows with both Vista and Windows 7 came out.
My desktop will very likely not be "pwn3d" again for a very, very long time. And it now does what I want it to do. I like it. :-)Comment

A few years ago I had a a "Pentium 4 Hyperthreader 3.0GHz" w/1GB of DDR-400 RAM, an old [DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DEFEAT THE WORD FILTER] FX5200 32MB, 80GB SATAI drive, it was running Windows XP SP3 with minimal software other than drivers, and Office 2003. Netflix streaming did not skip a beat, on standard 15-pin VGA.
Then I switched it up to a "Pentium D 3.0GHz" w/2GB DDR2 800 RAM, an ATI X600 video card 128MB, and Windows 7 Ultimate 80gb SATAI drive, w/minimal software other than drivers, and Office 2003. Netflix streaming was choppy, on standard 15-pin VGA.
Yeah, like I said Windows 7 is slower.
Anyone streaming Netflix on a Linux box?
I bought a Roku, but just curious.Last edited by chiefcrash; 07-03-2012, 9:50 AM.Comment

Why would you think that "standard 15 pin vga" would make a difference? a standard 15pin vga connection can handle 1080p just as well as a displayport/dvi/hdmi/5 cable BNC/etc...
Could it be that a few years ago netflix wasn't using the same streaming protocols/video codecs/etc? Yeah. It's well known that they've changed things over the years. Of course it's not like you bothered to actually test both configurations to tell the difference. Besides, if a 3ghz pentium D with 2GB of ram is all you can muster for a PC, do you need help? Some hardware donations maybe? I'm serious, I can go check to see if I have junk sitting around if it'll get you out of the computing stone-age. I know there's at least a core 2 duo e6850 w/ 2GB of ram collecting dust in a closet at home, possibly a socket 775 board for it as well. If you're willing to pay the shipping I'll gladly give it to you so you can have a computer with a processor that wasn't EOL'd 4 or 5 years ago so you have a chance to learn about the advancements in computer technology that have happened since 2005.Comment

Those were freebees from work a few years ago... Yep, all I could muster from scrap that would otherwise go unused, or eWasted. I very well couldn't take production hardware home as a tinker-toy (without worry of loosing my job), only obsolete stuff, per a verbal agreement with my director... Win 7 even drags compared to XP even on a Core2 Duo, yet even less on an i7, but no...
for netflix.Last edited by the86d; 06-12-2012, 3:35 PM.Comment

Really? Because windows 7 ran just fine on the c2d e6850, a xeon x3370, and an i7 3770k.Those were freebees from work a few years ago... This just re-affirms my point that you're doing it wrong.Comment

Okay, you got me...I'm doing it wrong.
My boss has ZERO problems with Windows Vista (i7 CPU 16GB RAM Lenovo), but he don't do sh!+ on it, other people do. Maybe you are in the same boat...
Coming from a user of cli from like MSDOS 3.1, I believe it was, I get pretty pissed at ANY lag to this day. I am just saying.Last edited by the86d; 06-12-2012, 3:55 PM.Comment

Yup, my computers just sit idle. I never made a previous post about using them for gaming, HTPC, etc. Just sittin' idle all day long. Just like those server machines that I do nothing with, you know, the ones that you couldn't figure out how to do something basic like get an SID from so I had to tell you? At no point have I ever done any video editing, database work, hyper-v, clustering, dealing with Microsoft's crappy DPM, and so on.
Look, if there are terms and acronyms you don't get, fine. But you're the one that couldn't get it working, you're the one who doesn't seem to understand that using a vga connection compared to something else isn't going to make your netflix stutter, and so on. If you want to use linux, fine. I've agreed with people in this very thread that it's great for some folks. You on the other hand have done nothing but lie, attempt(poorly) to spread dis-information, and show that you don't know how to use an OS so you blame microsoft instead(you're the one that agreed browser toolbars magically install themselves).
Maybe your boss knows how to use an ad-blocker and not open every email attachment? At this point all you're doing is acting like I imagine this lady would if she blamed the car manufacturer for her problems

Here we go:
Rick Zeman writes "According to the normally geek-friendly online store Newegg , installing Linux Mint is tantamount to breaking your new Lenovo laptop. Is it the purchaser's fault for not restoring the laptop to its original state of Windows-y goodness, or is NewEgg being too dogmatic trying to e...Comment

I never said I didn't post the image. We've also already gone over this again, but since you have memory issues...
He didn't accuse you of posting the image. He was referring to your comment that was in response to me posting the image
You're either agreeing with the users who think windows automagically does that to their browser, or you think it does not and those users are wrong. Your statement seems to agree with the users claiming it does that all by itself. So which is it? Do you believe that screenshot is a result of windows acting on it's own, or is it due to users clicking "yes" on everything without bothering to read?Microsoft hires the worst programmers who write the worst OS ever, yet somehow Windows is sentient and capable of screwing up it's own driver installs and adding browser toolbars with absolutely no input from the user other than turning the computer on. So is it that MS has horrible programmers writing horrible code, or that they've managed to create a slightly retarded but still functional AI like HAL 9000?Comment

What exactly does this have to do with anything being discussed in this thread? If you bothered to read that thread, the big problem is that Newegg itself doesn't have a means to recover the HDD that the customer wiped out, and the could have have gotten the installation media from Lenovo but didn't bother to. Do I agree that newegg should have refused the return because of that? No, that's why they return things to the vendor. Are you going to tell us about a movie you saw next? It would be just as on topic(and by that I mean off topic).Comment

I've asked you what, 4 times now about your statement yet you cannot answer a simple question with a yes or no answer. Because you won't verify your statement, I can only imagine you believe it to be true or you're a liar.
Also, apparently google image search is beyond the realm of your knowledge as well if you're assuming I wrote this blog entry back in 2004.

Odd. I'm running at least 7 y/o hardware, yet still run about 90 of the newest games without an issue. Windows 7 has a "hump " that once you are over out preforms XP by far. If you want to compare outdated, low spec hardware to a top end home PC, that is just ridiculous.Okay, you got me...I'm doing it wrong.

As for Linux being so great, my netbook sucks the donkey balls, running multiple different Linux distributions, still runs slightly better with a stripped down windows XP installation.
Also for the person comparing windows to gun rights....get real dude. That's like comparing oranges to commercial automatic car washes...yes that different.
