iPhone or Samsung?

I would like to try a top-tier Samsung e.g. Galaxy Nexus on straight ICS (or a nicely-done ROM). My experience with Samsung programming has been downright horrible. Their hardware has been iffy, especially wifi and GPS.

I got an unlocked Galaxy Nexus on T-mobile. I signed up for the value plan, $79.99 a month for 2 phones, 2gb of data before throttleing. Cheapest I have found and my data was much faster than with Sprint. Rooted and running the stock 4.02 image from Google directly.

WiFi-Tether, WifiKill, and FiOSWEPcalculator are some of the reasons why the knowledgeable choose Android. I don't like being told what features are available to me, like Apple does.

If I want to tether, I tether. If I don't want to apply an update, I don't. If I enable WiFi-Tethering, "an update" doesn't make me recrack the device to do it. You CAN EVEN kick iPhones off of ANY WiFi with a rooted Android (disassociate them from the AP at the touch of a on-screen button).

Open Source/System of Android is my choice, rather than Closed System that limits just about all features that COULD be available to you. Why limit yourself to what the vendor/MFR wants you to do when you can do SO MUCH MORE!?!?!?

(More Open Source) Android devices give you Gratis Liberty, Apple gives you what THEY want you to have (like Jerry Brown with Open Carry)... and very little can be changed in regards to that.

I am not forced to do things (like update) because the MFR tells me I have to (updating via iTunes is almost required?).

WiFi-Tethering can be encrypted with WPA/WPA2 on an Android, can you do that on an iPhone?

What about Open Source, non-apple builds/mods of OSuX/iOS from SOURCE CODE?

(PLEASE do NOT use WEP for your router's encryption [Maybe the code on the bottom of your router 0-9, and A-F chars only] it is crackable in less than 5 minutes. Even if you limit MAC addy access, MAC addys can be spoofed with only one command.)

really i just want to be able to check email, calguns, listen to online music, facebook, use google and its maps, have a good GPS, youtube, play some games, and take some pictures/videos. Whichever phone does that the best is what i'm looking for.

What he is saying is if you want the ability to what you want with your phone, go with an Android. If you want a chosen experience that allows you to do what they decide you should, go with Apple.

One important consideration so far ignored...what type of computer do you use at home?

2 years ago I was running a Win7 PC and got an iPhone 3GS (then new). You need iTunes to register and monkey with your phone. If you have your contacts in MS Outlook then the iPhone will sync there and you are done.

Now I am running a Mac PowerBook Pro and have a Samsung Galaxy. Go figure.

Bottom line you can't go wrong with Android or iOS. Both are outstanding. I moved all my contact info into the Google cloud. I will never have to re-enter that data again - which is nice. I like not being tied to a particular application like Outlook.

I've got an old phone. A samsung something with a slide-out keyboard. It's just for texting and talking.

I have an HP with Windows Vista right now (which i finally got used to...) and i really don't mind hooking my phone up to update. The whole "do what you want not what they want you to do" thing confuses me. What exactly can you not do on an iPhone that's so important??? I'm really not looking to do much with it. I'm not into all the techie stuff.

I can give you one non tinkering thing about Android that is pretty cool, you can buy apps from more than just the official Android app store. The amazon store has a free app every day. All iPhone apps come from the iTunes store unless your phone is jail broken (unless this has changed). I bought my phone and can change the operating system to any variant I want, even ones directly from Google that haven't been pushed onto the device.

good read. i'm still not sure what kind of customization i'd be missing out on if i went iPhone over Android though. When i think customization, i think ring-tones, backgrounds, screen settings, etc. What else is there that doesn't work on an iPhone???

Let's say you don't like the clock, or the way that the dock looks, or icons, those are all changeable in android. If you want all your icons to be white instead of in color, you can change that on android. It really allows you to make your phone look and act how you want it to act. You can upgrade the battery in most android phones most of them also have the ability to add all kinds of flash memory. The cost difference from a 16gb iPhone to a 32gb might be 100, you can buy a 32gb SD card for very cheap. Go to the android market and look at themes, you can change so much about how your phone looks without even rooting.

Another thing is widgets. You can have a widget for the weather or news or Facebook that you can have updated without having to open an app.

If you need your phone to function properly, iPhone is the way to go. It has the best engineering. Despite what some folks say, Apple doesn't control the phone for the sake of control. They control it for the sake of quality. They don't want you to have to deal with things that frankly you should never have to think about. Why should you worry about permissions? Why should you worry about task managers? Why should you worry about rooting? You shouldn't! You should make phone calls, browse the web, check your email, check your calendar, and it should all just work.

well i've never seen anyone's android phone that i just HAD to have similar icons or color schemes. and all the apps or widget things i've seen displayed on an iphone looked fine to me. seems like small potatoes in the grand scheme of the phone. I'm more about function than looks. If i could change how it ran, that would be one thing. But looks...meh, not that important.
