What would be the quickest weapon to bring into action (unloaded on arrival) and where and how would you stow the ammo? Keep in consideration it would be nice to have your offlist AK with you but law enforcement, DA and the family of the scumbag you put down might not see it your way.
The best trunk gun to have is an ak47. Keep a turban in there and then go get some molding clay and then wrap them in a wax paper with the words "C4" on them and then get a batery operated alarm clock. Remove the case of the clock and throw it into your trunk ontop of the gun and molding

Leave yer trunk open. No one will dare touch yer car

Realistically... a great trunk gun is something that will be effective but not get you into crap with a overzealous anti-gun cop if for any reason you get into an accident and the trunk is propped open.

A cheap "security" shotgun best bet.

A Kel-tec SU16B is another option of a cheap gun that is PRK legal for this role.

          rifle with 30 rd mags

and don't forget the raid jacket which says "Law Abiding Citizen" or "Good Guy"
False is the idea of utility that sacrifices a thousand real advantages for one imaginary or trifling inconvenience; that would take fire from men because it burns, and water because one may drown in it; that has no remedy for evils except destruction. The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such a nature. They disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes.

SKS would be reliable and dependable; only limiting factor is the ten rounds on a stripper clip making for a reload harder than would be with a regular rifle with detachable box magazine. I'd add a pistol to whatever you choose.

Are you guys saying we can carry a shotgun(not locked) with rounds in the trunk? Or am I reading it wrong?

Can you show me anywhere in the penal code or any other set of laws that says different? Even if you read something on the internet, it's up to you to know the laws for yourself since it will be you who will pay the consequences if you break the law.

SKS or a cheap shotgun should work. I would also argue a RAA saiga would be effective since it is magazine feed, powerful and reliable. After all it is legal and also called "self loading carbine hunting rifle" according to the manual. Also personal views of the DA or the police on politically correct guns are irrelevant when it comes to self defense.

Yes you can have shotgun/long gun with the ammo right next to it since it does not violate 12025 or 12031 of the penal code. You can conceal long guns and OC handguns. You can look up people vs clark. Use the search button....look at thread "what is loaded", open carry(legal to walk around with a unloaded gun with ammo, beware of school zones and other restrictions) or trunk guns. There has been alot of threads poping up lately with the same question, maybe we should make a sticky thread dealing just with transportation.

Three considerations: usability, standing out and cost.

Cost means you want something that's not too expensive, since it could get stolen with your car, beat around in the trunk, etc.

Standing out is the AR/AK vs. everything else. What's your comfort level in the situation?

Lastly is usability - ideally we'd all like an SBR FA AR or AK with a suppressor, but that's not gonna happen.

                                Here are my "top 5":
1.) Saiga - $300, drops mags, good round for 0-300yds and still looks like a hunting rifle
2.) SKS - cheaper than a Saiga, more friendly, but heavier and, while stripper clips are fast, mags are faster (the advantage is you can carry a ton more ammo on strippers than in mags)
3.) Mossberg, Winchester or Remington pump SG - cheap as dirt (<$200), extremely flexible (0-20yd deadly, with 100yds not a problem with slugs). dead nuts reliable, zero issues with hassle.
4.) M1 Carbine - light, good round to 150yds, big mags, lots of firepower - but their price has come up a good deal ($500+)
5.) Mini 14/30 - no issues with hassle, but not cheap ($600+) and not as ergonomic as the others, so it's at the bottom.
