Dress Code at Public Gun Range?

If I am operating a range, at the minimum, I would require that shooters wear:
- Eye protection.
- Ear protection.
- Closed top shoes.

This is not only for their own protection, but also let me run a business smoothly. If someone is injured, it will disrupt the operation of the range as police and paramedics descend on the range and I'll have tons of paperwork to fill out.

In addition, I'll have my RSOs pay attention to groups wearing gang colors. If they're keeping to themselves and not being disruptive, that is ok. But if they start doing something stupid, like yelling, cussing, harassing other customers and generally making a nuisance of themselves, they'll be asked to leave. This also applies to students wearing their college shirts and corporate customers wearing company T-shirts. As far as I'm concerned, attires that serve to identify individuals as belonging to any organizations (except US LEO or US Military) are listed under "gang colors". So it doesn't matter to me if your group wears the gang colors of a Oakland street gang, Stanford/Princeton University sports shirt or the Cisco company polo, behave yourself and there won't be any problems.

Seems rather odd...

That's simply not true.

If (as just one example) the range in question became a magnet for people dressed like gang-bangers, it could well drive others away, so there is also an economic issue.

There are other ways to discourage those types without turning your range into Project Runway.

Naw. The ranges I shoot at probably wouldn't allow you to gain admittance. You must have someone else in mind.

I guess not. I was at a public outdoor range and a young couple was there with some small children. They went out to set targets and the kids were running around wearing flip flops amongst the broken glass and other jagged remains of items that people had brought to shoot up.

I mentioned to him that it might not be a good idea, as they might get cut on that stuff. He just looked at me with a "duh" expression.

I imagine that at a privately operated range there would be liability concerns with people dressed inappropriately.
