    Civilian Tactical Training

Just curious as to what my options are regarding Civilian Tactical Training. I am interested so I don't spaz out under pressure when the zombies attack. I want to be squared away and know what gear I need etc to survive.

I can't think of a better way to prepare than to do some type of training, become proficient in AR-15 and Handgun, along with Precision/Long Range shooting (I'm halfway done with my 24" AR-10 moohahaha).

I want to get some 5.11 pants/belt/boots and some type of Molle Vest that I can throw on in less than a minute or two and be ready to rock. I just need training for tac purposes, and need to learn the ins and outs, dos and don'ts. I also don't want a "2-week" course, I would like something I can do on a regular basis. The more I practice, the better I'll be when s*it hits the fan.

Suggestions, Opinions on what to do, where to go for civie training?

    thanks
    J

I'm a Front sight member so I'm biased........

Find a certificate to Front Sight on ebay, or do a course through the buddy system. I'd recommend the 4 day handgun course 1st, followed by a 5th day CCW course (as long as you're there).

Bang for the buck (and with repeatability in mind), FS is a good option and closer for you in San Diego, than for me in Manteca. Do a search as there are many threads here on it. Even a basic membership will allow you to go whenever you can and reinforce skills like 5 count draw, malfunctions, draw from concealment, and shoot and move. Practical Rifle, and Precision Rifle courses would be excellent for you.

Other options include Thunder Ranch, Gunsite, Gabe Suarez and International Tactical Training.

      I hope that helps.

Kudos for your initiative to get some good gun training.
Too bad I don't know any training in your area. You may want to attend the next gun show in your area and speak with some of the training vendors. You might even get a discounted introductory price (I got a first day training for only $35).

Here's my experience from my brief handgun training at Civilian Arms Training in Prado, CA. It was a one day "Level I" training. They do not allow drop-leg or cross draw holsters. They require a sturdy belt, holster, and a lot of ammo. They teach you the basics from the start. So be prepared for some classroom. Stuff we covered... 5 point draw, clearing jams and stovepipes, various reloading techniques, accelerated and controlled pairs (double taps), Mozambique drills (2 to center mass, one to head), triple press (three shots from three positions as your raising your handgun), and finally, dogwalk. Their main themes... gun safety and muscle memory.

All in all... it was a wonderful experience and would do it again.

It sounds like that training group doesn't want to waste their time on normal civvies who just want some training. Looks like their are geared for private security and competition shooters...

LMS Defense is also an option in your area. I'm sure MaceWindu will chime in here as he trains with them quite often.
Also, this question will likely get more responses in the 'Competition and Training Forum'.
                Hope this helps.

I'll second the recommedation for Front Sight. There are a variety of courses each month (except July/August...but July does have "night versions" of some of the tactical classes). There are others...but I find that Front Sight is a place that I can go to over and over again.

One alternative, there are many if you do a search here and the web in general, is :
Concealed, ccw, concealed carry, firearms, pistol, shotgun, carbine, rifle, training, shooting, guns, handgun, gun, gun training, firearms training, pistol training,

Up the 15 to the 91 from SD.

TFTT has excellent training; both in curriculum and instructors! They are not geared for couch potatoes.

I can also highly recommend Tactical Response (which is geared a little more towards a civilian-focus). Neither curriculum is for non-starters. Expect high-intensity and some amount of discomfort. Any training of this type isn't really worthwhile if you're not being pushed out of your comfort zone. You won't be training for what goes right ... you'll be training for what goes wrong.

Both outfits do training at different locations/facilities. Check out their respective schedules for something near you ... or make a vacation out of it and go somewhere different (that's what I usually do).

Bruce Krell trains people out of Angeles Range in Los Angeles. Last time I checked, his one day courses run in the $100-$150 ballpark. The one day courses are very fast pasted and very intense. He will push you to your limits, and than some. The last time I took one of his courses was back in early 2006. To this day, the things he taught me in one day has stuck with me.

                              +1 on TFTT.

I took TFTT's VIP/PSD Class and Tac 1 pistol class.

Max Joseph is one of the best out there and his classes give the best bang for the buck.

Make sure you are squared away before enrolling in one of his classes.
