Find 2 gun or 3 gun or practical pistol comps, IDPA or IPSC etc.

You learn tons through competition. Formal training is an excellent idea, but a lot can be learned through competition as well.

I am also collecting opinions on tactical training schools in SoCal. What do you think about West Coast Tactical?

I recommend FTA as someone posted above. They are located somewhere in ornage county but they train at rahaugees. Shotgun (tactical) trainin is good and theyu got all sorts of tactical training there.

It's hard for me to justify paying $650 dollars for a four day course. I might retain a few drills, but the majority of it I will forget. Do they offer any training videos with the packages?

Where would I got to keep my skills up?

These are serious questions and no way trying to knock this stuff. It's something I am very interested in, but I worry about the training after the classes.

FTA has a "end of month" practice every ..end of month.
Need to have taken their General Handgun first. Basically so you are clued in to their range commands and they can have some confidence in your range safety.
                  More details on their website.
These are supervised practices, which is great for people like the wife and daughters who don't get out too often.
Typically they run thru handgun drills then switch to carbine and shotgun for a short time.

A civi giving or recieving military training in CA is illegal. Serious- look it up. My buddy got door-knocked by FBI for a video of some shooting drills he put on Youtube. The video was shot in NV, so he told them to beat it.

Where's the PC on that one?

Also - most shooting classes are not deemed "military training" as far as I know...

First, the best way to get going in being more proficient with your firearms is to shoot them. So, find some clubs in the area and go out and compete. Yeah, some folks do it strictly for competition. However, I'll tell you that as a veterean of 2 overseas tours (in less than 3 years), working with all the members of the military's special operations teams, that outside of force on force training you will be hard pressed to invoke good stress training that can be found easily in competition shooting.

Too, getting the fundamentals from a NRA certified instructor isn't bad either. While much of the information is very basic, there is great information to be learned and from there good instruction can be received. Remember....Knowledge, Skills and Attitude.

Lastly, while I don't recommend Front Sight to ANYONE, I will recommend some individual instructors: Mike Voigt (CA), Bennie Cooley (ID), Matt Burkett (AZ) and most of Kyle Lamb (Viking Tactics, NC). Any of these folks can take care of your competition and moreso tactical needs in training. Their resumes speak volumes and their shooting and understanding of the mechanics and tactics needed to win a fight is second to none. A phenomenal group of people to work with would be Tiger Swan.

Hope that helps. I plan on organizing classes/training with all of these instructors in the upcoming months. Most of them are friends and as such one would think that I'm biased. However, all of them started as my instructors first and their professionalism and friendly nature is what has made us friends.

Do your research. TFTT have a ton of civvies in their Pistol 1-3 classes. Best bang for the buck IMHO. Max has one of the best reps in the business. Show up squared away, dont be "that guy". You will learn how to use a gun in these classes.

Don't waste your money on Stefani, Bill Beasly, NRA type BS training. Run away.

You wont learn anything unless you challenge yourself.

Two places in the county north of you, Orange, that I would recommend:

Self Defense Firearms Training - http://www.firearmstraining.com
                            Firearms Training Associates - http://www.ftatv.com/

I would not recommend TFTT like others have. Any place that requires you wear a vest cannot be safe. I've also heard of several of their students having "accidents" on the range. And by accidents, I mean there is a reason he requires his students to wear those vests. And wow, did anyone else notice the fifth question on their FAQ? You can tell they are not frequent visitors here.

Uh, are you kidding me? I would assume that many of the tactics and techniques demonstrated in these classes are military based. I would assume that the training I receive(d) as a cop is military based. We are civilians also. Please provide some support for the above-listed FUD.
