Smile Manteca Sportsmen Winter Rimfire Shoot

Thought this might be a good place to post.

This is for anyone who lives near the Manteca Sportmen who might be interested in doing a little shooting over the next couple of months. A winter indoor 'rimfire only' shoot was approved by the board about a week and a half ago at my request. We will be shooting rifles on the indoor range which is at the main clubhouse. I will be running this event for roughly the next 8 weeks or until daylight savings kicks in. So I'll be the RSO. This will be running after the range is generally closed so the general staff will have gone home (or in the house next door).

Several people will be working on the "Light Rifle" award from the Winchester Shooting Program, some plan to practice offhand for high power, and a couple of people just plan on plinking to sharpen skills. Shooting in general over the winter is a good way to keep up skills and spend a little time with some fun company. Indoor range has 10 lanes so everyone can shoot. We may rotate if there is a lot of interest.

Location: Indoor range on other side of office.
Time: Starts 6pm - 9pm Monday evenings
Cost: Free for members. $2 for non-members. Non-members will have to sign liability form before shooting, but regular $15 range fee is waived each evening you wish to attend. $2 basically pays for the electricity for fan and targets. I'll be taking money and handing out forms.

If you haven't been to the club in awhile, and/or just want to do a little informal shooting and have some fun over this winter, hope to see you there.

From behind the bench, its a little bit longer than 50-55ft. Winchester Shooting Program for the 'Light Rifle' course calls for 50ft. 9-10 ring is smaller than a dime.

If you just want to plink, we've got smaller silhouette targets about the size of quarters. Course you can always just use your own targets.

Started last Monday but there's plenty of weeks left if anyone wants a fun evening out. This is for adults but if you've got a teenager at home this might be fun. If below a teenager, I'd prefer you skip and go to the free kids shoot held 1st Friday of every month. This isn't a class but if you want tips on positions, someone can probably assist if you ask.

A little cold but fun last night. Just because a couple of wives showed up, there's no need to be shy about coming out and joining us. Its is a little cold inside (fan circulates air from the outside), but warmer in the main room. Wear a coat and hat. Just to give you an idea on the variety of rifles people bring/use, last night there was a Henry AR-7 which was kinda cool. Someone else brought their old Stevens single shot. Still others with Marlins, a Mossberg, an old Remington M541 X target, a lever action Henry, and a Kimber target .22 rifle. And a few shooters with 10/22's were present.

Its $2 for non members. Club house may look dark as you drive up. We are inside

Many are just goofing having fun. I've been working through the 'light rifle course' with the Winchester Shooting Program as mentioned above. Pistol Silhouette is also at 50ft (uses different targets) if you'd prefer to bring out a .22 handgun.

This is the target used.

Middle target is for sighters. Take two shots/target. Ten targets/sheet or 20 rounds for aggregate score x/200.

4th target off that sheet. Happens to be 20/20. Not trying to boast since theses are less common than i'd like. Just letting you know it is possible with a standard trigger on a 10/22.

Levels for light rifle.
Pro-marksman = 100/200 twice
Marksman = 125/200 twice
Marksman 1st class = 150/200 thrice (I just finished this level last night)
Sharpshooter = 165/200 (4 times)
Expert = 180/200 (6 times)
Distinguished Expert = 191/200 (10 times)

Wish I was more consistent with my 10/22. Thus far my high score is 181/200 which after 6 sheets would qualify me for 'Expert,' but really need to drop in a better hammer and springs if i'm to earn the Distinguished Expert rocker. Isn't going to happen with a 7 lb trigger. 191/200 will be tough for me with a 2-3 lb trigger. Fun stuff. Hope to see you out next Monday.

Finished Sharpshooter last Monday (see post 4). I'll make it to Expert if my previous scores continue as they are or improve a little. Really need to drop in a lighter trigger after I plateau.

Come on out for a little fun tomorrow night. $2 for non members. Bring your teenager/girl friend/ co-worker/buddy out for some informal shooting. Might meet some other calgunners.

Took last Monday off and had 3 targets of 180/200 to 'Expert' for the 'light rifle course.' Shot 5 targets, threw out 2, and finished 'Expert.' High thus far is 186/200. Without polishing the trigger/sear parts, or buying a better trigger/hammer, this is where i'll plateau.

Here's my brother in law and buddy.

Come on out. Will continue for another month. Inside is now quite warm. At $2, you've got nothing to lose. Not an older crowd but mixed. Fun, relaxing, bad jokes free of charge.

Looking forward to tonight. Dropped a new Volquartsen Target Hammer into my 10/22. Hoping to see a big difference in accuracy. Might do some conventional bulls-eye with my Ruger 22/45. Starts at 6pm if interested.

I've also attached a reduced 50ft Appleseed target if that's your thing. We have plenty of other free targets, but are welcome to bring your own.

Pretty happy tonight. While I was RSO for most of the evening, I did manage to find time to shoot two targets. I scored 191/200 and 193/200 respectively. Swapped using my range bag for a solid rest and my scores jumped. Olympic level? LOL. Hardly. But good enough for this novice.

Aside from the targets in the photo is the score sheet. I'm on the last level for 'Distinguished Expert(DE).' Each level is on the honor system except DE. For DE, you must have a NRA member (with current ID number), or an NRA instructor or coach (with current ID number) witness/score each target. 8 more and I've got the WMP 'light rifle' complete.

The Manteca Sportsmen Winter Rimfire Shoot will go to the end of March. You're still welcome to join us. Free for members. $2 for non members.

Smile Almost over but hoping you make a little time and join us.

There's only two more Mondays left. Would like to see some local Calgun members out for some fun. You can bring any paper target and its only $2 for non members. Regular staff has gone home so its just this guy running the indoor range. People do show somewhat late if 6pm is too early for you. Runs until 9pm.

I've attached a hostage target (from accurateshooter.com) which a few people are having some fun with. Feel free to print a few out and come on out.

Numbers have really varied week to week. Fortunately we've never had enough to force us into relays. So if the past is any indication, you're assured a spot on the line for the whole evening. Cya Monday

Last organized Monday night shoot on the indoor range was tonight. 6pm. Sorry you missed it.

Finally finished the NRA/WMP Light Rifle award. If I can get the board to go along with a 3 month summer league, I'll start a new thread. Otherwise, hope to see you out there next year.
