Two thoughts.
One,sometimes handguns are tested by the factory before your receive them.I purchased a new handgun from my dealer once and I noticed brass marks on the slide consistent with previous shooting.The gun was smothered in preservative and the feed ramp was nice n shiny-but someone shot that gun before I got it.The same thing happened with a new Walther I just picked up,although that piece included a 15m target in the box.
Two;always inspect your purchase.Factories make mistakes too-and yes ,I've found a few that way.One time me and my FFL opened a box to find a totally different gun in the case from what the barcode label said.The more prohibitions you have, the less virtuous people will be.

Check the serial number on the DROS form, and the serial number on the gun you have in your hand. That *should* tell you if there's been an "accidental" swap between a new and used one.
S&W customer service may also be able to tell you the manufactured-on date of the gun you have.===============

Over at Guns fishing and Other Stuff, all their guns are clearly marked as used or new. I can't see how they could swap guns on you since the serial number was required on the DROS form for pistol or revolver sales. Did you check against the SN on the gun and the DROS form? Even if you didn't, they would have. And I can't see how the gun can rust in 15 days like you mentioned even after extensive use at their range.
