That pretty much sums it up.
Time was ~9:30 to 9:45, we close at 5:00 on Saturdays, I understand he did not know our hours. No other cars were in the parking lot. My truck was parked sideways in front of the store, running with lights on to cover the store exit while we loaded money and guns to leave. A vehicle I've never seen pulls up at a rate I feel was a little fast. This is exactly the kind of nightmare we prepare for and I was absolutely in fear not only for my life but my wife and every person that would be harmed if my store full of guns and ammo falls into the wrong hands.
My gun was never pointed at anyone, it was at low ready.
I spoke to the person in the SUV and told them we were closed hours ago.
I assume the person that started this post is the one who sent us an e-mail last night ~10:45 with his phone number. I called that person this morning and apologized for any hurt feelings and explained my perspective and reason for my actions.
We are sincerely sorry for any misunderstandings, but our safety and the safety of others who may be harmed if we were to be robbed must come first.
I doubt there are many criminals riding around in a fj cruiser with family in but.
1) A responsible gun owner scans there surroundings for any danger.
2) low and ready draw is still a draw.
3) this isn't the wild west, once a gun is off its holster i consider that a threat myself.
4) I think this owner needs more passive defensive training besides situational awareness.
5) I would be afraid to ask a question for fear of being shot atehhhComment

You're defending him! I'm definitely going to shop with you now!I won't comment on the scenario here as I wasn't there. I would like to think that if I rolled up into a gun store's parking lot late and night and the dude drew on me, I would probably understand. As long as his gun was not pointed at me, I would probably get over it. The more interesting thing is what would I do since I wouldn't be traveling to my Granny's House in Northfork without my Glock either. Would I have drawn too or would I have backed the hell out of there? Well now I know I wouldn't even pull into the parking lot. I might stay out on the highway and call them instead to see if they are open.
What does crack me up is how everyone on Calguns likes to get fired up abut these threads. Monday morning quarterbacking at its finest. People who have no idea where this store is nor its actual layout have Spencer's security plan all laid out for him.
And my all time favorite, "Well I will never shop at your store!". Of course you won't, you live in San Diego or Redding. LOL.
Hell I will probably get some "You are defending him! I will never shop with you either!" Oh noes! Not the Calguns lynch mob!
I am glad this thread exists. It might bring a little more awareness to the general public that if it is late at night and there is only one car in the gun shop parking lot, they are probably closed. Get on your smart phone, find their phone number, and call before pulling in. Again, Spencer's is a unique location (never been in his store, drove by more times than I can count) and so most of you don't fully understand it is not normal for vehicles to pull into his lot late at night and it wasn't like they were just cruising through the strip mall and stopped to ask.
If it wasn't the OP posting this thread and instead he was robbed and killed, all the keyboard commandos would have been wondering why he didn't see them coming and draw sooner."If it wears out, replace it. If it breaks, upgrade." -Cranky Air Force Vet.

I just can't seem to let go of how angry and quick to decide what is right and what is wrong, you think things are. First, you don't have any clue if the owner has had or not had training. Second, you have no actual knowledge of what went down, as only the OP and the owner were there. Third, giving the Police Institute as a reference for good training, I hope you have been there to give this suggestion out. As someone who has been there for two classes, and finding both to be borderline simpleminded, I would not push all training to that one facility. And I doubt if the owner would care if you came in to his shop or not with your attitude about things, as far as I can tell.

Well, I'm amused.
I just can't seem to let go of how angry and quick to decide what is right and what is wrong, you think things are.
Angry? Really, show me where I exhibited anger. Till then this appears to be an attempt to marginalize. Not a really effective one, but a time worn tool nonetheless.
First, you don't have any clue if the owner has had or not had training.
His actions in setting himself up as he did have either untrained or untrainable written all over them. His actions as he himself described them. He put himself in that position. Who trained him to do that?
Second, you have no actual knowledge of what went down, as only the OP and the owner were there.
Patently false, as both the aggressor and the victim posted their views of the events here. Perhaps you missed those posts.
Third, giving the Police Institute as a reference for good training, I hope you have been there to give this suggestion out.
I posted it as a suggestion for local training for the brandisher. Again, did I say "good" anywhere? If I did, post it up or stop constructing strawmen.
Any training is better than none.
As someone who has been there for two classes, and finding both to be borderline simpleminded, I would not push all training to that one facility.
Now you are using your strawman from above to criticize the quality of "simpleminded" training versus, I suppose, no training at all. Do I understand your argument correctly? Or is it that they just don't rise to your lofty standards? I'm confused by your claims here.
Well, we all know what the result of untrained gun brandishers is. Again, refer to the narratives posted here by both the victim and the untrained aggressor for details.
And I doubt if the owner would care if you came in to his shop or not with your attitude about things, as far as I can tell.
I've been by his shop many times, never stopped. Won't ever now, and couldn't give a **** whether the owner cares or not.
But that wasn't to subject of this thread was it?
So we have the anger construct, the training quality strawman, and the diversion as to whether this gun brandisher would miss me in his shop.
Nice!
ETA, I'm gonna label the claim that the victim was driving way too fast as after the fact BS.Originally posted by SilverTauronConsidering the facts of how easily safes can be defeated, a park bench offers the same amount of protection.Originally posted by loose_electronPE card? Lol, I am amused by your response as well. You seem to be the wises and most proficient writer in your town. Maybe you are the Sheldon of Calguns? And to actually to take training which may then give false information or training techniques could be more harmful than none. IMHO.
By the way calling someone a genius. Is this your way to put yourself up on a pedestal or just to belittle another? Just curious...

And since you don't appear to want to discuss the firearm brandisher in Madera, or provide any cites for your claims:
You win.

Ninety, that's the most helpful post in this entire thread.Never initiate force against another. That should be the underlying principle of your life. But should someone do violence to you, retaliate without hesitation, without reservation, without quarter, until you are sure that he will never wish to harm - or never be capable of harming - you or yours again.

So....... I had a kinda close thing happen. I don't like getting into it. But I have PLENTY of Cal guner witnesses and he lost out on a 6500 sale because hes a dick. This is the WORST gun shop I have ever been to. Not only was he degrading his customers but threatened people at his store. I will never recommend him. I have heard TONS of stories like this locally. This is NOT the first time. They get 2 thumbs down.Comment

When people recommend proper "tactical" training schools, they don't usually recommend the local community college part-time police academy that uses TTPs from the 1980s. They refer to places like ITTS, Gunsite, Thunder Ranch, EAG Tactical. etc.Last edited by kantstudien; 12-26-2012, 8:36 PM.Comment

This thread is pretty baffling...
Store owner is damn lucky things didn't escalate. If you can't run your shop without drawing on a vehicle (low ready or not) without being provoked, you need to be in a different line of work.
Good thing OP wasn't an off duty cop.
