To let people make their own informed decision, I would suggest posting a review on Yelp, Google+, Yahoo, etc. That way people can decide whether or not they want to patronize the business.

What gun shop is open until midnight? Maybe in Alaska. Even pawnshops lock the front doors after 8-10pm and have a window they do business through.

Yeah, I would have done the same. It was after all past 9:00. I don't know any mom and pop gun shops
open that late.

That's entirely understandable however, that doesn't give you the right to pull a gun at free will. His actual drawing (confirmed) and pointing (disputed amongst both parties) were both overboard.

I know of at least two in San Diego that stay open till 10PM 2 days a week, and others in SD and OC till 9PM. Isn't as uncommon as you think in some locales.

I can see how the guy got spooked if he was unloading firearms, however, he should have locked the gate if he was doing so afterhours. Seems the negligence was on his part because of this. This whole thing could have been avoided if he only followed protocol. Unfortunate it did happen, but life goes on, and as the OP has stated, he has the right to not give him any of this future business.

That pretty much sums it up.

Time was ~9:30 to 9:45, we close at 5:00 on Saturdays, I understand he did not know our hours. No other cars were in the parking lot. My truck was parked sideways in front of the store, running with lights on to cover the store exit while we loaded money and guns to leave. A vehicle I've never seen pulls up at a rate I feel was a little fast. This is exactly the kind of nightmare we prepare for and I was absolutely in fear not only for my life but my wife and every person that would be harmed if my store full of guns and ammo falls into the wrong hands.

My gun was never pointed at anyone, it was at low ready.

I spoke to the person in the SUV and told them we were closed hours ago.

I assume the person that started this post is the one who sent us an e-mail last night ~10:45 with his phone number. I called that person this morning and apologized for any hurt feelings and explained my perspective and reason for my actions.

We are sincerely sorry for any misunderstandings, but our safety and the safety of others who may be harmed if we were to be robbed must come first.

One thing not mentioned here is that the store is in a very rural area. Yes it is off the highway but the only things open around there at that time of night are convenience stores which are located 2 miles north and 2 miles south. I'm not surprised at all that somebody is a little overly cautious out there. Where I live muggings usually start with a simple question.

Assuming you're correct....still, the follow up failed. Much could have been done by Spencers to clarify this situation in the minutes after the family rolled up. The OP left the scene with the impression that the owner of Spencers was out of line. A normal businessman would have done some explaining, introduced himself to the family in the car, shaken hands with the OP and perhaps invited them over for a future visit. Made a friend, made a new customer. etc...just the basics folks.

You weren't there, as a matter of fact none of you were. Only Spencer and the OP and it seems as if its been worked out. I've been robbed twice at gunpoint, the first time they rolled in as we were closing. And despite my "experience" I wouldn't try to assess the situation after the fact either. I wasn't there either...

Us they were not there and not involved cannot make a judgment call. From a FFL point of view, when we're doing anything after hours we are always extremely aware and cautions of anyone who attempt to make contact with us.

I wasn't there, we were not there so we cannot determine any justification or otherwise from such a discussion. From my personal feelings, I'm not condemning nor commending Spencer's Firearms but I understand where he was at and sympathize with his course of action.

9-10:00 is when many business, especially restaurants, are robbed. Thieves know thats when they make deposits. With cash and guns around its hard to blame the owner for being overly cautious. A high powered flashlight and better procedures may have helped avoid this encounter, but it is what it is. Lessons learned now get over it.

Fresno has some of the highest crime in the nation. I would have drawn my gun too if some suspicious SUV pulled into my gun store waay after hours during a cash/guns offload. Don't get upset over it.
