This thread is pretty baffling...

Store owner is damn lucky things didn't escalate. If you can't run your shop without drawing on a vehicle (low ready or not) without being provoked, you need to be in a different line of work.

I think most people don't expect stores to close so early :P it may have been hours before, but most of us that work are not home by 6:00

One thing not mentioned here is that the store is in a very rural area. Yes it is off the highway but the only things open around there at that time of night are convenience stores which are located 2 miles north and 2 miles south. I'm not surprised at all that somebody is a little overly cautious out there. Where I live muggings usually start with a simple question.

For the amount of people who have responded to this post that live around or have been to that store im supriseed not more of you have described the area.... this is not some gun store in the middle of town. Its not like anyone else is around.

Between 9-10 pm off the side of the highway with not much around, and not used to seeing people that time of night in your parking lot might would be a little nerv-racking...

I aggree though maybe he should take the time to realize from now on just close the gate when you close at 6 ish and you plan to stick around till 9-10pm.

For those of us that live in this fabulous county (sarcasim) you are aware that if you call the sheriff you are aware there will be little to nothing done, and if they do respond they are put out they have to do there job....

I have bought several thing from this store and have never gotten the impression they were unfriendly, or rude... in fact i would recommend this store over others in the madera/ fresno area.

i Live 20 miles from this store (in madera) and at the time metioned 9-10pm if someone knocks on my door and im not expecting anyone, i can assure you that i have a hand on my glock! This not a great area, and law enforcment isnt exactly got your back around here. unless ther cops around here catch the person robbing you they wont do anything but file a report, i wanna make sure that person is still around by the time MCSO arrives!

im not taking anyones side im just saying sounds like both did things that was out of the norm. Lessons learned for both partys!

Driving up to a store hoping to see if they are open is normal. Drawing on a car that pulls up is not Normal. The store is in the middle of nowhere, I get that, but I think if he was more aware of his surrounding , he might have acted differently. Sounds like he was spooked. I have gone to this store lots of times. Monique is nice. Spencer not so much.

Hmm... 9:30 at night. (Its dark) In the middle of nowhere. FJ cruiser comes into parking lot ( that means headlights are shining directly at the front of the store) (and owner).
Anyone ever seen an FJ cruiser that didn't come with tinted windows?
Unless the headlights are off and the interior light is on, nobody can see anything I side those cars.

If the gun store owner closed the gate to the parking lot, we won't have any of this! How many of us drive up to a store when lights are on and car in the parking lot to find out if they are open or not?

Yes, it was me that you chatted with this morning! Again, me and my family still feel this was inappropriate. No, we didn't drive up in a van looking like some dangerous bunch. We drove up in an FJ Cruiser, parked in a parking stall 30' or so away. We did not even get out of the vehicle, just rolled the window down and asked if they were still open. Obvious, the owner was very fidgety and I understand he's been robbed before. I don't think that give's him the right to just assume every Tom, Dick, and Harry is out to get him. I don't think a weapon should be exposed until you actually feel like your under a threat, NOT because you feel like to need to show someone your gun. I don't answer my front door with my weapon ready and exposed, like we discussed. But apparently you do! Just a different train of thought.

Remember that this is Christmas season, and many stores are open later than usual. Best Buy is open until 11 p.m. now. When we were driving by and saw all the lights on, the gate open, and the truck sitting out front we just assumed you were open for business. It was only around 9 p.m. which we didn't consider to late!

Again, like I suggested on the phone, maybe you should keep your gate closed until your actually ready to leave! That would have avoided this whole situation in the first place!

Anyone who puts himself in such a vulnerable position as to have to draw his weapon on whomever drives up is making mistake #1 in self-defense.

I don't care how much militiary experience you have, which branch of the service you were in, and how many gunstores you've owned.

If you arrange an operation like this one, you have learned little, apparently.

I would avoid this store.

The owner plans his dealings poorly and then puts innocents at risk with his over-reactions.
