bigmike If local law enforcement was called and didn't bother coming out, I'd say his actions probably weren't all too unreasonable. Situational awareness? 4 hours after closing time ,strange car, transferring firearms/cash between store and vehicle. Store owner may or may not have overreacted, PROBABLY DID. His number one priority is his safety. Anti gunners have nothing to do with my safety. Feel free to contact them before you react to any situation concerning your safety. The Anti Gun crowd would never have heard this story had the Pro Gun OP not posted. He should have handled this situation during his phone conversation when the store owner responded to his email. He didn't get the profuse apology he wanted, so he came here for retribution. None of us were there. My opinion-neither made the best choices, both can live with the outcome. If OP wants to push the issue with law enforcement, I have no problem with that. Coming here, in a public forum, with this story is what will feed the anti-gunnies as you call them.

Wasn't here looking for an apology from anyone! Store owner didn't call me, until after this was posted already. I guess I was just venting and thought others would know more than me, concerning someone brandishing their firearm. The sheriffs department did offer for me to file a report, and I decided not to. This guy makes a living, and if convicted of an idiotic action could probably loose his license, etc.. That wasn't my goal, just hope that he learns something here and me as well. I still feel like he was in the wrong, and realize from this that it's a mixed bag of feelings regarding this issue.

Me and my family were the ones in the vehicle, so we have our own version. He was doing his thing, and his wife(I'm assuming) was inside the store behind the counter doing her thing. So Im sure they both have their versions as well.

If the owner hadn't been so jumpy and nervous about the whole incident we would have just drove off without any question. It was his demeanor that had us worried, we felt like if we would have hiccuped wrong the situation would have gotten a lot worse. He didn't pull his weapon until after we rolled the window down and asked if they were open. We didn't even have time to say thanks and leave, the whole incident was just strange. We immediately backed out and left, never to return!

Not sure about his shop, but mine was subjected to death threats after last Friday. Just saying! I was a little jumpy a few days after, when the Sheriff's dept told me to look under my car for pipe bombs before getting in it. Some people react differently when dealing with stress. Not saying its right, not saying its wrong. Everyones level of fear is different.

If the OP had a CCW would he have been justified it drawing his weapon in order the confront this unknown threat?

              Interesting situation...

IDK. There are a couple gun shops around here that are open pretty late. One stays open until midnight. With the holidays and all the panic buying plus the open gate, I can see why OP thought the store might've been open.

Anyway, who approaches a vehicle they deem to be a threat? If I thought someone was gonna rob me, I'd probably take a better defensive position. From OP's story, it sounds like the owner was pretty reckless.

Good question. If he felt threatened, I am sure. They both better be very good at articulating themselves in the police report that would have followed if shots rang out. Great question..

I posted a question earlier, but I'll change it up a little. For those of you who say he was justified, what if your teenage daughter was lost and stopped to ask for directions. Would you still blame her for the incident?

As others have stated, you have a gate, use it.
Can't help but agree with this.

As the op said he seen a place that looked like it was open and just wanted to check it out. Even though it was late I myself might want to drive by and see what the hours of operation are. And for that he gets a gun drawn on him? Sounds nutty to me.

What of it was a criminal asking for directions to look legit? We can talk about scenarios all day but they don't do any good. You must act in a split second with the circumstances provided.

Absolutely! What if it was a car full of hajis looking to rape his wife and daughter? In fact, given the potential threat, it showed great restraint on the shop owners part that he didn't immediately open fire on the approaching vehicle.

First of all, you have two posts. Are you the individual in question, a relative of the individual, or a friend? The mentality of "why even bring up the issue!" is just ridiculous. If something like this had happened at a store that I frequent, I would absolutely never buy anything from there again. There are plenty of businesses who don't pull out their guns at my family that I can buy stuff from. This sort of thing NEEDS TO BE PUBLICIZED, just like the OP has done, so that potential customers can both understand what kind of jumpy people are running particular shops and whether they want to give their hard earned dollars to them. I don't care how it will be perceived to the outside world, I don't believe in censoring the truth. (something that this forum does on a regular basis, whether self-imposed or otherwise)

And to reply to a different poster: just because the PD chose to do nothing means jack all. This was, potentially, a violation of certain codes. That it was a gun shop, probably one that likely gives out discounts to LEOs, is likely the main reason nothing was done.

What gun shop is open until midnight? Maybe in Alaska. Even pawnshops lock the front doors after 8-10pm and have a window they do business through.

I think we can all agree that without having been there we cannot say how we would have felt, acted, or reacted. Let it go at that.
