Posting your guns on facebook.

Are you crazy? Firstly, you shouldn't be posting pics of your guns anywhere (You shouldn't even do it here, let alone Facebook. Shouldn't even list them). Secondly, no one has 300 "friends" though I do understand that Facebook has totally changed and negated any real definition of friendship. Thirdly, what makes you think you can trust Facebook for crissakes.

For those of you who "nuked" your Twitter, FB, etc. a while ago, go and search for yourself of Spokeo.com You may be in for an unpleasant surprise.

I did an interview with famed hacker Kevin Mitnick for a big Fox film. During the interview, he had his laptop. He asked for my legal name. Within three minutes he was able to pull up my current home address, every address I have ever lived at for my entire 49 years, the hospital I was born in, my SS#, all of my credit card numbers and a lot of other stuff, schools I graduated from, you name it. And then he told me that this was not sophisticated hacking at all, this was stuff that millions of people can easily do, if they know the right websites and utilities to use.

There is no such thing as privacy for anyone anymore, unless they have never been on-line and even then, there is a surprising amount of stuff out there. Posting your crap on FB and even here just makes it a bit easier, that's all, but all of your stuff is out there on the web, trust me.

Had this same thought when I got my beautiful stainless 357, but I think ultimately it's a bad idea to put it out there that these are in your home, because at the same time when you're posting your vacation status somebody might be inclined to go ahead and help themselves. Happened to a friend of mine, knew exactly who took it too.

I am also weary of the legal implications if you had to apply lethal force in a defense scenario and the prosecution put your pictures on display as you showing off your guns to the world and being blood thirsty through some twisted argument. If you want to show your friends, just have them come by or hit the range with you.

Haven't used FB in a very very long time since I don't trust what has been done with allot of the info. On the flip side why in the world would anyone post a "I'm on vacation" notice?

That to me is tenfold the stupidity of posting pictures.

well considering the only friends on my FB are people I actually know/have met and am close to/communicate with regularly - I'm pretty good there. A do have friends in other countries and states that I keep in contact through with facebook.

I have no issues posting pictures of legally owned items (firearms included) on facebook.. whatever. yea... go ahead and tell me how one of my friends is going to come and try and steal my **** when I am on vacation.. LOL

Your friends won't be doing the hit. Criminal associates of your friends on the other hand will be. Remember that bad guys don't wear badges saying "IM A FELON". Some bad guys have legitimate jobs, cut their hair, and don't have tattoos. Odds are we rub shoulders with shady people and have no idea of it.

+1. The ATF doesn't need Facebook or any public website to ID how many guns you have. In a state like California with its own registry its even more foolish to think you have any privacy on the matter.

By itself spokeo doesn't do anything. If you know a thing or two about your target like where they live or what their actual relatives are , it becomes a little more useful. Like you though, im apparently a 50 year old guy.

Believe me, I'm well aware that by even having a Myspace, FB, Twitter and all that other jazz at some point in history I've already revealed more than I should have. Additionally, identity theft is more cunning and capapble than ever, but the idea is to minimize the damage starting today. You could pull up my page on those god forsaken sites but they wouldn't reveal anything about me after 2010, or so, and definitely not the firearms. From here on out it's as low a profile as possible...

on facebook, the only way friends of friends will see any information or posts or photos is if I allow them to, or if my friend SHARES the photo or status update.. which with my settings requires my approval first.

When someone clicks like- many private pics and posts are now public

In the video, someone posted a 55 Gallon drum that had a KY Jelly sticker on it
Someone clicked like and made a funny comment

His image then showed up in an ad for KY.
FB sold his like to KY and KY used his profile pic in an ad....

This might be funny hype to make a point but once you post the pic, expect it to be in Google Images and anywhere else on the web

If I used Facebook, I'd consider posting a pic of the boat in which all my guns were lost during that tragic accident.
