If your looking for some no BS training from a reputable traininer that is very affordable, try TFTT with Max Joseph.

I took TFTT's 4 day VIP/PSD course and the tac pistol 1 course for less than 1k bucks. Thats 5 days worth of training too! Lots of shooting and i mean lots of shooting.

His classes are held at burro canyon (private training area) and are GTG.

If this is your first ever handgun course, and you've got a low or no cost certificate to take the course, then go for it. I took the 4 day handgun class and also the 2 day handgun skill builder class in '99 and they were both good on the fundamentals, and I think their approach to learning and practicing skills is solid. That being said, back in '99 (when they were still in Bakersfield), they were representing that "Phase 1" of their mega resort and planned community was just around the corner! It's still not there. Plus the lectures and some of the range instruction seemed canned; it seemed like there was a really tight rein on what was said and how it was said. I suppose that was for quality control but it had kind of a fake quality to it.

Anyway, I don't think I'd go back there, there are just too many good trainers out there nowadays teaching classes in California or neighboring states. Just a few examples:

Yup, that was a great opportunity to rack up certs. Have a few buddies that were creating massive numbers of web sites at angelfire for any, and everyone they knew. No one time use on those certs, so they stockpiled them up, donate 1 every year for a 2k deduction. They cut and paste creating tons of those sites. 20-30 minutes a pop. Heck, they can go FREE for years now. Awesome deal at the time.

I am convinced. OK, so the 4 days certificate was a gift and my only $$$ outlay is the incremental costs of hotel, food, transportation and ammo so….from those of you that are believers….a few more questions if you do not mind.

I want to take the 4 day handgun class:

1) Holster – do they need to be CCW (like a pancake) or can they be the belted hip style like a duty rig?
2) I will be using a 1911. How many mags will I need?
3) Is it cheaper to bring my own ammo or buy it there? (I understand I will need 800 rds)
4) What hotels can anyone recommend?
5) Would you fly or drive from San Jose?

Holsters:--Your choice on the holster but if you go with a belt holster, make sure you have a stout belt like a Wilderness instructor's belt

Magazines: When I took my courses, I brought a dozen mags but I'm of the philosophy that says you can never have too many magazines. I took my courses when FS was still in Bakersfield (5-Dogs)and dust was everywhere This is also why I took a backup 1911 as well. I had to clean my 1911 every lunch break due to dust and dirty ammo (Fiocchi)

Ammo: Its always cheaper to bring your own ammo although I have heard that Pahrump WalMart will take orders for ammo and have it ready for your arrival. Get the Blazer Brass if you want my opinion.

Hotels No personal experience.

I have been to FS in Nevada a couple of times (Submachinegun shoots) and find that driving from San Jose to Vegas takes me about 8-9 hours. If you are going alone then its your call (Get a book on CD or 2) but driving does save you hassles with transporting firearms and ammo thru airports and lets you leave on your own schedule. If you're going with friends then driving is fun and economical

I hope you enjoy your FS experience. I loved every class I took and learned a lot. It was money well spent.

Yea I and even my mom got one of those 4day handgun course certs for a 100 bucks and then got their free 4 day Select fire M4 course when they were giving the opportunity... oh and mom signed up for myspace to get one too lol
(can't wait to see her do that)
