I recommend not answering the question.

My doctor knows that I have guns, but he didn't learn it in an office visit - and I doubt the info is in my chart.

For the patients in my practice that I am aware of owning guns, I can guarantee that such info will NEVER enter the chart. It really isn't the government's business, and with the electronic records the info will be readily available to the government.

It is just an amazing cooincidence that NONE of my patients even knows what a gun is.

I've never been asked by a doctor whether I own guns, but there's only one response that makes any sense to me: with a slightly quizzical facial expression and a mildly surprised tone: "Of course."

If enough people answer the question as if it's the most natural thing in the world, maybe they'll get the message that it actually is.

(But then again, several docs around here CCW when working in the ER. There have been a couple of "incidents" that have given them cause to be careful...)

I took a clipboard to my kid's doctor visit once. When the nurse asked that, I asked, "Do you have any junkfood in YOUR house?" I made a checkmark, took some notes, shook my head, and said, "Tsk, tsk, tsk..."

You know? Assuming parents are too stupid to secure dangerous items and keep their kids safe is insulting.

You need to make sure the parents know that the kid is going to start doing things like rolling over, crawling, walking, etc. so that they know what to watch for. But parents know that babies should not play with guns or have access to medicine bottles.

And if you want to be sure the parents know? Give them a handout which lists the common dangerous items and how to secure them and your kiddo. You don't have to pry into their home inventory.

I was asked that exact same question a couple weeks ago. My 2 year old daughter was due for a wellness check and we were all in the examination room and the Dr. Asked, "do you own any guns, rifles shotguns?" I was like, what's it to you?.. He quickly responded we are worried about lead poisoning... I just said "you have nothing to worry about doc", with a big smile and that was the end of that..

I agree. First of over half of my shirts have some pro gun comment or topic so I am not hiding it. Second I state that I am a certified NRA instructor and all my guns are safely stored. I don't tell many people how many guns I have, just that I have several. I do offer to take them shooting if they are interested.

Anyone posting here that thinks the government can't figure out they own guns isn't vary smart in the first place.
