I recommend not answering the question.

My doctor knows that I have guns, but he didn't learn it in an office visit - and I doubt the info is in my chart.

It's a Public Health and Safety thing. Seatbelts and baby seats, cabinet locks for cleaners and poisons, safely secured guns, swimming pool gates, store medications out of reach, tightly capped, etc. Probably an item on a list of subjects to discuss with new parents.

It's not a political thing (except for the usual haplophobes).

On the medical center's form asking that, I checked the box that read "Not Applicable."
I have asked for a lead level check when I have a blood test once a year.
That's because I melt and cast lead for 500 or so 230 grain swc fishing weights, from time to time...

It doesn't make sence but I guess different hospitals have different protocols.

You know? Assuming parents are too stupid to secure dangerous items and keep their kids safe is insulting.

You need to make sure the parents know that the kid is going to start doing things like rolling over, crawling, walking, etc. so that they know what to watch for. But parents know that babies should not play with guns or have access to medicine bottles.

And if you want to be sure the parents know? Give them a handout which lists the common dangerous items and how to secure them and your kiddo. You don't have to pry into their home inventory.

Sorry, but it IS a political thing disguised as a public health issue. My answer is NDBBM! Since I am the client, they can do without my money (or my health issurance's money) if they don't like the answer.

When My daughter was born I got hit with that question. It was on a questionnaire I didn't check anything and I don't think they asked. or if they did I said none of your business.

Saturday we spent the night at the hospital with my 19 month old. (he is fine now but had a NASTY flu)

the nurse on the pediatric ward noticed my NRA cap and made a comment

me: (joking) I was hoping my son would be well enough to go to the gun show tomorrow

nurse: you have guns, those things are dangerous

me: well just the one end is

nurse: those thing are always going off by accident and hurting kids!

me: oh... how long have you been a pediatric nurse?

                  Nurse: 10 years

me: how many kids have you seen with gunshot wounds?

nurse: well there were 2 no, no, 3

me: how many have you had in for ingesting household cleaning supplies

nurse: (suddenly very interested in her clip board)

                  me: how about pool accidents?

nurse: (no eye contact, starts walking away acting busy)

me: ya know there are a lot more homes with guns than with pools.

It was supposed to be viewed as such, but until they pass out Eddie Eagle brochure about gun safety instead of Brady/LCAV talking points, it IS a purely political thing and the beginning of the "guns are bad m'kay" indoctrination.

Q: do you own or have any firearms in your house?

A: nope just thermonuclear weapons, and a loose leaf note book.

Next completely useless and very invasive question please.

                            I'd probably say
"Excuse Me ? Can I have your SSN# ATM and PIN#, No ? wait, were you serious ? that's funny. Next question."

Most likely, I would just get a new Doctor.
