I actually read about a doctor that terminated a kid from their care because the parents refused to answer that question.

American Association of Pediatrics or whatever seems to think that it's a good idea for you to disclose how many firearms you have in your house so that they can call child protective services on you because you're a bad parent.

There was something I was reading not too long ago about trying to get them to stop doing that because it serves no purpose.

If I were those parents, the doctor would have heard from my lawyer. That action is at a minimum, unethical - and at a maximum, patient abandonment.

Years ago (as in over 25) my kid's doctor, with whom I had a great relationship asked me that question. When I told her her yes, she completely freaked out. She applied a great deal of pressure and made it abundantly that she thought by merely having guns I was placing them in grave danger. I did asked her how much she knew about guns and made it clear that she was not going to get me to give up my guns. If I had told her that my 4 year old had recently fired a gun for the first time, I am sure she would have either fallen over dead or called the cops!

It became apparent that she knew absolutely nothing about guns and was merely acting on the information from the anti-gun rights folks who communicate their lies to the medical profession.

IMHO, Tom Gresham had the two best suggestions I have ever heard:

          1) Tell the practitioner that you believe their is a "boundary issue" with the question. The truth is that the question is not within the scope of practice of a medical doctor. A broad question, such as "Are all items hazardous to children, such as cleaning supplies, poisons and firearms stored in such a way that your child cannot access them?", would be OK - and would not cross the line. A question only about guns is not appropriate - and if you answer yes, you are likely to be pressured to get rid of them.

          2) Ask the doctor what training they have had in firearms handling, storage and safety. We they say "none", then just point out that they are not qualified to give advice in that area. Once again, you might also point out how unwise it is to be giving advice in an area outside their scope of practice - especially since they have received no training in that area.

Nurse: Do you have any guns in the house?

Me: Sure do. Wifey says I have one helluva shooter in my pants. That 'splains the kid, maam.

I've been to a few doctor visits with my wife for my daughter and they have never asked me that question. I don't see why they would. I also don't see a reason why I would lie and say No. If they asked me "how many" with my wife in the room, I would have to decline to answer. Maybe the doctor puts "father armed, please give 100% proper medical care" in the child's medical records. you never know lol.

That would really bother me for some reason. I would probably tell her off.

My kids doctor asked when he was about 4 months old, in the context of general household safety.

Are there any firearms in the house? My answer was "Properly stored"

That was the end of it.

My answer would be "I only feel comfortable answering if you tell me how many guns you have".

You could ask, "shouldn't you be more concerned with how many bicycles are in my house, since they kill more children each year than guns?"
