In North County I would say:

Precision Arms - Escondido, if you want expert advice on long range or precision shooting and optics from people that do it every day, either as a profession or as a hobby, I think you're making a big mistake if you dont talk to them. I've done a lot of business there and never been disappointed.

Quantico Tactical Supply, Oceanside, has a smallish gun counter in back, they are more about gear than guns, but you can still find good deals. It's a very small chain owned and operated by Marines (they are crippled by the laws we have in PRK and lots of guns they sell in other states they dont sell here), the O-side store has added benefits since we have so much of the SEAL and Marine scouts and snipers that they carry in-store a lot of packs that the other locations dont. Like the Eberlestock Phantom I just got for $300 out the door during holiday weekend sale! (go beat that on Amazon or eBay, not happening!!!)

Duncans, San Marcos, I've heard mixed bag from folks with these guys. Personally I've had several good experiences with them. I dropped one gun off for gunsmith repair that they ended up not being able to get parts in for (it was a freakin ancient gun) and they didnt charge me for it, so I figured even though they blew the estimate of turn around by a couple months it was okay (it was frustrating to have to keep following up with them for status but they said up front their gunsmiths were swamped... so my opinion is "deal with it"). I bought a few small guns through them, never any trouble, paid in advance for one they thought they could get in and it didnt show up, got a full refund on the spot no questions asked before the 30th day would have required another DROS fee. They do get busy though, so expect to spend some time waiting for help unless you're going there to pick exactly what you need off the shelf like cleaning or maintenance supplies etc...

Direct Action Solutions, Solana Beach Definitely some great guys to work with, I've bought a couple guns through them, highly recommended as well! They will treat you right!

This is just me, but personally whenever I can, I spend my money at a local gunshoppe instead of a chain like Big 5, Turners or whomever... the reason being those little guys scrapping it out are why we still have the market to buy things in Commiefornia. If I have to spend $20-$50 more at one of the local mom and pop shoppes than at Turners when they are running a sale, I'll gladly do it. EVERY TIME. Them having a business and the customer service I get is worth every extra penny.

I know for a fact I can call small shoppes I do business with and ask about getting a lower parts kit installed for free, and it's simply a matter of scheduling a time thats convenient to them! (you really need to have bought at least the lower if not also the parts kit FROM THEM to ask for this lol)

    Anyway, thats just me!

P.S. I'd also give a good recommendation for Parallax Tactical but they aren't North County where I usually do my business and shopping. Very good guys though and just like the other shoppes I mentioned very knowledgeable.

I really like Kerleys in Cupertino. Great guys, great store. I still want to give US Firearms Co in Sunnyvale a try.

I know you are asking for SoCal, but for my NorCal brothers reading this post....

Bad: Markleys in Watsonville (I hope they go out of business, they are idiots), The Gun Exchange in San Jose (very cramped, not a big selection, cranky old man), Targetmasters in Milpitas (bad clientele, too busy), Gunrunners in Merced (not a big selection, run down).

Good: Gun Vault in Mountain View (can be a little pricey), Reeds indoor range in San Jose (can be pricey too),

Ok: Alquist Arms in Turlock (good prices, limited selection), Bass Pro Shops in Manteca (Not enough people working the counter, prices are average to high, big selection, cool store).

Also good places in north Cali is J&R in Livermore Targetmasters in milpitas is hit or miss but their gun pricess are reasonable. As for bad places their is this place in Castro valley I rather not say their name but most people probably already know who it is.

Some of my best customer service experiences in SoCal have been with Fort Courage in Simi Valley.

Bain & Davis is a very "American" store if that make sense. They favor old school guns and they damn well should!
Pasadena Turner's is actually pretty awesome. I went in there to do a PPT, only took like 25 mins, quick and simple.

Now I gotta come back on the 26th, but so far, everything looks rosy.

Terrific staff from what I could see.

The only problem I have with Turner's is that there isn't one around here.

Of course we do have Huntington's, the birthplace of RCBS. Prices are high, though.

OC Armory. Mike and Patrick are the best. After my last purchase there, I probably won't buy a gun anywhere else.

I've also had good experiences at Turner's in Pasadena.

I've been to ammo bros in Cerritos a few times. Not awful, but the folks there aren't the friendliest. The sense I get is, we're huge and awesome, and I don't care if I get your business. So even though I've been eyeballing that sig 556 on the wall, odds are good I won't be getting it there.

Gun Slingers in Glendora, and Bullet Barn in upland. These two stores have great customer service and these guys KNOW what they are selling, and have alot of info.
Ammo Bros in Ontario is pretty cool. Rifle gear is good too but too far to drive for me.

I used to go to gunnrunners in Duarte 1-1/2yrs ago but one time they had a shipment of PMC, I called to reserve 2 cases and they said they would hold them for me. an hour later I arrived and there was only 1 case, I asked they guy what happened to the other case and he said he just sold it, I told him I had called to reserve them and his reply was "oh well". I walked out and never went back since, didn't buy the 1 case either.
